The Scott Santiago Mission turned up in a black bag full of other skis, but these stood out from the rest because of the monolithic width.  Fine - you can be near the front of the queue.

Scott Santiago Mission 2006

Model: Santiago Mission
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 168/? 178/? 183/?
Length Tested: 178

Manufacturer's Description:

"If you’re in search of a ripping everyday ski, look for the Santiago Mission, a fat ski that will give you confidence in all snow conditions. The Santiago Mission also features sandwich sidewall construction with a cap laminate while adding considerably more sidecut than the Pure. The outcome is a very forgiving and friendly ski that loves to be opened up. The Santiago Mission is available in 168cm/86mm underfoot, 178cm/89mm underfoot and 183cm/90mm underfoot."
Ski-Review's verdict:

The fat ski revolution is happening and it is skis like the Scott Santiago Mission which are popularizing it.  It seems all colleagues, friends and acquaintances are consistently keen to get on the fatter freeride skis rather than the latest carving machine.

I took the Santiago Mission out a day after the Aztec, and this ski quickly grew on me as the hard pack slowly disappeared in our late season freeze thaw cycle.  I ventured higher to find some less uniform snow. The Santiago is not a fan of the hard stuff, but in soft snow and slush these are highly amusing and lively at speed thought the slush, jumping from mound to mound.  I was not afraid to get lateral to the ground either, the weighty tips smashing through the slush as I clocked some surprisingly stable speed lines in the hot sun.

Unfortunately, these were sent back to UK just as I got to go and play in the recent snow fall, but definitely a good buy for someone who likes differing terrain, crud and slush skiing on the pistes.  I would be interested to hear about its deep powder performance too.  Although a wide ski this packs some weight!

Bring the powder

Just returned from Sun Valley. got a powder dump and was recommended these skis by the mountain sport shop. Wow!!.. Unbelievable flotation and turning in powder. Smooth as silk. Skied the rest of the day on crud and they were equally good. Bashed through everything. Very maneuvable on bumps. Need to stay on edge on flats and at speed. Can't have everything. Great ski.
