Salomon Teneighty Foil (2006)

The Salomon Teneighty Foil first adorned Ski-Review’s pages back in February when we got a close up look of an early pair when it was less than clear to us how the range would be structured.

Salomon Teneighty Foil 2006

Model: Teneighty Foil
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 150/11.1 158/13 166/15.2 174/17.6 182/20.4
Sidecut: 124/79/111 124/81/112 124/83/113 124/85/114 124/87/115 (respectively)
Length Tested: 174 & 182

Manufacturer's Description:

“If One day you dreamed about a ski designed to perform from the back bowls to the park and to offer no limit to expression ... this ski is made for you. With the FOIL there is no longer any limits between freeride and freestyle.
FAT and LIGHT, the FOIL will allowed you to skim over the snow and to perform every tricks.
The FOIL is the central tool of your TENEIGHTY quiver, usefull in any kind of terrain.”

Ski-Review's verdict:

Since then a short (174) pair at the demo in April -- Pure Demo Days, and I had the chance to ride the 182 at the death of the season a week or so later when us hangers-on were blessed with the mother of all dumps.  Therefore, perhaps a little late, it is time for a review.

The Teneighty Foil is meant for all-mountain skiing without fully removing the Teneighty freestyle heritage.  This season gone I had been working on my tricks in the park, so when I got the 182 I took the new found knowledge off piste to give backcountry freestyle a try.

A few successes and a few stacks but that is where the fun is, and of course the acorns for plenty of après ski laughing at your expense. I really did enjoy this day out – the length was perfect.

On the lower slopes, ice on the way out and slush on the way home and these skis did cope with the ice, but where happier going home on the slush, and with ample tails you got to go switch.

Up higher, they had plenty of lift in the powder, and the tails made them awesome landing switch – almost from the Zag school of ski design. My only personal criticism of this ski is how stiff the tails are if the ski is to be used as a freestyle ski, but in turn this does make this ski nice and snappy for the piste.

All in all a good thumbs up for the Salomon 1080 Foil -- basically ski it like you stole it!  Just hope the Teneighty lives longer than some of its predecessors.

Tried these on the last day of the season before heading home (yeah, the day before you hangers-on were blessed with the mother of all dumps), and thought they were absolutely cracking. Buy a pair right now ;)

What size
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-09-29 11:01:52

Dear Duncan Mills!

Looking for your suggestions in choosing the length for my new Salomon 1080 Foil, since I won't get a chance to demo different lenghts here in Europe.
I am 5'10", 175 lbs, 28 yo and have been on skis since I started walking.

Currently I ski on 160cm K2 Mach S Comp and 160 K2 Axis X due to mostly skiing short quick turns and I find them both stable enough in higher speeds probably due to my weight. I will be keeping the S Comps for my on-piste skiing and will sell the Axis X's.

Therefore I am choosing between these 2 lengths for the 1080 Foils casue I'm not looking for a bigger radius ski:

a. 166cm, sidecut 124-83-113, radius 15.2m
b. 174cm, sidecut 124-85-114, radius 17.6m

I will be jibbing mostly on-piste doing jumps and some off-piste exploring.
I don't know how twin-tips are compared to normal skis in length due to the tail and (probably) shorter running edge length.

Appreciate all the help!

Of the lenghts you have mentioned, If I was you I would go for the 174. hope this helps.

another size Q?
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-10-24 19:42:54

I ski about 95 precent east... and most of that is in NY with occasional trips to VT.... I weigh like 180, and im fairly agressive out of the park... Will 174 be to small?
My concenrs with the 182 are this....
1. slightly wide at 87 in the waist
2. will they be less versitile with 20.4 m radius vs 17.6 @ 174

IM currently on 179 PE's

RE: another size Q
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-10-25 05:57:02

I don't think there will be much of a difference between the two (if you're a strong skier).
I'm pretty sure that you won't be able to make such easy quick turns, that you will be able with the 174.
I know you are looking for that (from EpicSki) and I was too and therefore got the 174, and I can tell you it is enough ski at that length!

I plan to abuse my skis on ice, rocks, stumps, bumps and some occasional powder in the Northeast. I'm 6'0 and 175lbs. Is the 1080 for me?

They will do it but don't

Foil vs. PE vs. Karma
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-11-12 22:44:50

I'm an advanced skier looking for an all-mountain twin-tip. I ski everthing fairly well (powder, bumps, park). I can't figure out which of these three is my best bet.

Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-11-24 11:54:36

Karma's no question but can you pay the price?

core
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-11-29 22:39:43

I hear the wood core is better to have in the long run. ALso, that the core in the salomon skis often degrade over time. Should i be concerned with the life expectancy of these skis prior to purchasing?

well duh
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-11-29 22:41:15

yes I certainly wood!, as these things are not cheap and if, I am spending all this money I would like them to last,

PE, Foil, BC, or Chonic?

Sorry, but to add to my comment above, I'm an intermidiate skier that skis the east cost, mainly VT.

I am looking to get into some twin tip skis and have heard good things about these. My question also is what size though. I am 6'4 215 so I am the gorilla on the slopes. I feel I am more advanced, and ski aggresively. Any suggestions? Thanks- The Gorilla

I am starting to do freestyle skiing this year for a race club i go to. I am 15 years old and i have been skiing since i have been walking. I am 5'3 and 125 lbs. I was wondering if the Foils (and if i should definitely get the 150?) would be a good ski for me. I am an all around skiier and i can ski just about everything everywhere.

I live in south England, breat Britain, so the chance of getting a good dump of snow is about as likely as seeing a pig in a gimp suit jump Niagra falls. Bearing this in mind, i ski mainly on a dry slope near me, and plan to go to either canada, france or possibly both in the next few years to get my CSIA and BASI instructor awards. would the 1080 flyers in 161 be ok for me? I'm about 5'9" and about 74 kilos.

no look at a length closer to 170

Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-12-10 00:38:02

I'm looking for a ski that does everything well, but doesn't have to specialize in anything. I ski mostly groomed and park and consider myself a lesser skilled advanced skier. Basically, I am looking for a great all around ski that does everything.

Salomon, get a real ski
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-12-22 19:10:32

Yeh sure, the Foil skis ok, as does the other Salomon skis. However, for the price, get a proper ski that lasts and doesnt lose its flex. I just dont want you guys wasting your money. Karma, Public Enemy, Prophet are much better skis. Questions? E-mail me at jamesclark86@hotmail.com. Disagree? You don't ski properly.

New Skis
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-01-05 22:34:09

I'm in the market for a new pair of skis. I'm an agressive, relatively advanced skier, but by no means an expert. I ski groomers, ice, bumps, trees, powder (whenever I can find it), and ocassionally/rarely park (I'm not very good at it). I ski mostly in the New England region (mainly VT). I do not want a park/jib ski by any means, but I thoroughly enjoy skiing backwards, so I definetly want a twin-tip. In summary I basically want a well rounded, all-mountain, twin-tip ski. Sorry for the long-winded description.

Foil vs Guns
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-02-08 07:08:10

I tried both skis in a 166 today. Im 170lb 5'9" expert skier in Kootenays of BC. Hard conditions today. The foil was easier turning lighter and more fun. The Salomon rep suggsted a 174 Foil would be best for me. I felt the 166 was great for the ugly conditions of today. Sure would like to try them in powder!

1080 Foils = Sweetness
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-02-14 17:08:47

In answer to your questions about weight.. im 6'0" 190lbs and I ride 174 and they are perfect. If you weigh more than 200, you might want to think about the 182s. These are light and great in the park. Even better in the trees and perform amazing in the powder. They are not that great on crud though and I had some trouble carving through that this past weekend when the conditions sucked. They also chatter a little when you are taking high speeds on groomers so you need to keep your weight forward in those conditions. All around, I think its a great ski and Salomon got it right.

Foils
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-02-24 01:36:06

Just bought 174 Foils. Im 5'9" 170 lb expert skier at Red Mnt BC (a Big Western mountain). The Foils are light, quick and agile. THe do get tossed around in stiff crud. The are great in powder and carve the hardpack and bumps. I wish they were softer. The are easier handling than the Guns (Not as stiff or plankly). Great ski that is a lot of fun.
Also tried the 2006 Bandit B3, Kootenay powder sticks, 2006 Salomon Gun, 2004 Volant Chubb, old volkl explosive, Atomics, Extra hot pilot, Blizzard Titan 8.2, etc. Bandit was the 2nd choice. My favorite ski still is the Volant Powerkarve and the old chubb.

FOILS
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-17 23:31:30

These skis are sooooo sick. I just demoed them for the day amd i had so much fun. I mostly did high speed carving and riding switch and these skis and sweet. I was concerned about how these skis would carve on the groomers but the first time i took them down, i loved them. I would definatly recommmed these skis to anyone who is looking to have a fun time on any terrain.

PE's or FOILS??
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-20 04:03:46

I found a good deal on a pair of PE's, and was wondering if I should get the FOILS or the PE's if I want to do more of everything. I like to ski bumps, and basically everything, not much terrain park though. Which is the better choice?

Ice
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-20 22:35:47

I am currently looking for a new pair of twin tip skiis. I am 5'10 180lbs. and live in upstate NY. I am looking for a ski that is good in the park but can also handle all the ice that is associated with the east coast. FOIL or other?

Foil Size
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-22 09:20:45

I just bought a set of Foils in 166 size. I'm 5'10" 175 and came from skiing a 168 2nd year teneighty. I demo'ed the 166 and 174 beforehand. I found because of the stiffness the 174 didn't handle as well in the trees and bumps. However, they handled better at high speeds on the cruisers. Pick your poision i guess. I'm mostly a quick turner skiing on the non - groomed stuff. Pick your size depending on your weight and skiing style.

Trying to decide between the 174 and the 182. Are the 182's going to make much of a difference in the powder? Whats the trade off?

Core degradation
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-04-06 14:18:54

I have noticed that there have been quite a few comments about the core degrading over time. As it is not a wood core, should I be worried about the flex going out of them over a shorter period of time than normal? Thanks.

Got the 166s
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-04-06 16:43:49

I am 5'9" 170 and I got the 166s over the 174s. I skied two full days on them right after I got them, and I was not disappointed with the length at all! I especially appreciated them on the extremely steep sections where it almost took zero effort to get those suckers turned. Provided plenty of stability on all of the snow conditions that i came across. Float in powder was more than what I expected, but I did just come from 191 Volkls which were really bad. 166 also was easy to spin in the park as well.

I have been on skis all my life I'm 21 years old and a very aggresive skier. I'm 6'2" 185lbs. What size length ski should I be looking at?

Foil or Gun sizing
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-09-04 17:51:46

Salomon Foil 174, I demoed them last year and they are beautiful.
I am 5'10", 145lbs 24yr and in awesome shape. I have tried alot skis and longer length skis wether fat or regular skis on groomers are were its at. Like if all I was skiing was groomers and open powder bowls I would not hesitate to go with 185 Gun or 182 Foil. But if you go into the park or hunt for the freshies in the trees 165 Gun or 174 Foil are the ticket. Choices Choices.

Karmas or Foils or what?

166 or 174 foils
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-11-08 11:16:09

I want to take my Foils in the park. I am 5 10 and about 160 lbs. Will the 166s be the better choice for maneuverability, or will that sacrifice too much length? Thanks (I also ski a lot of groomers)

166
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-11-21 10:28:33

I'm 5'8 and I have a pair of Foils, I also weigh about 155-160 and I couldn't love these skis more.

174 vs 174
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-11-21 10:35:24

So I solved the good old length situation everyone seems to be having...I bought a pair of Gun 174's for those good old pow days, and I also bought a pair of Foil 174's for those days when the snow is packed down nice. I am 6'1 and about 205 lbs.

Karma's
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-11-29 12:09:44

I believe that the 1080 Foils are great (especially when first demo'd), however, they seriously degrade quite quickly, within a season and a half the core is gone and they flex up too much. The Karma's are stiff, yes - but a great all round ski. They are heavier (think about what binding you mount), but they handle a bunch of differing conditions better. They are not going to fall to pieces like the Foils historically have. I skied two seasons on a pair of Karma's in Colorado - 5 days a week and they are still in one piece! Karma's are not exceptionally maneuverable in the trees & park, but you deal with it and they romp every other condition! Mantra's are a wicked powder ski - but thats the extent of them - not great all round - Gotama's even better powder ski!
Just think about what you need out of the skis and ensure you invest your coin in the right way. Keep ripping it up!

I'm an intermediate to advanced skier, 5'10'' and about 205 pounds.

I ski mainly on piste but want to move into the parks and off-piste more.

What size would you suggest?

Anybody's advice would be greatly appreciated.

Uses and Lengths

If you're going to use them for mostly park, go for the 166's, since they're lighter and thinner. If you're looking for an off-piste beast, definitely ride the 174's or the 182's since they are fatter and probably can cut through more snow.

What Size?

I'm about 5' 6" and weigh about 150. I usually ski powder, but I can rip up the hardpack too (both are skied VERY aggressivly). I dont do a lot of park skiing. Mainly I do backcountry jumps and drop-offs. I dont know whether to get 174's or 166's or if I should just get Bandit B2's. Any advice would be appreciated.

I just bought a pair of 182cm 1080 foils for $100. I saw them at the Friday Sale where a guy buys whole lots of damaged or blemished stuff. I bought them before I even knew how good they were. Didn't matter, they're Salomon, so how bad could they be? Now I can afford to put the new Fritschi Backcountry binding on them...c'mon pow!!!!!!!!!

FOILS ON ALL SORTS

I took a pair of foils to Vale last April and they were mega in all conditions.

I admit i didnt take them in the park - and perhaps this is a little odd in that i got 1080's and dont plan on doing much if any park stuff.

I found them quick - easy to turn and responsive on the groomers -

I found they floated well in the powder - even the deeeeeeep waist high stuff on the back bowls when i managed to sneak in while it was closed one morning when the nasty weather came in.

They are a brilliant ski and going switch is alot of fun when your learning.

Im 6'1 and weight about 15st

I took a pair that were 164 somethings and they were SHORT - it was kinda like skiing long blades and I have since bought me some 174's

Off to France next week and im expecting big things.

Foils or Bandits

I'm looking for an all mountain ski but I'm not sure whether to go for the 2006 foils or the 2007 rossignol b2 bandits. Anyone know which is better?
