Salomon XW Fury (2007)

Yay! No more Pilot! I can actually FEEL what’s happening with the XW Fury under my boots. Easy to ski especially to initiate. The moderate side cut and softer shovel make the Fury user friendly and even tolerant to some classic (older) technique, for those that insist on using one ski instead of two.

Salomon XW Fury

Model: Salomon XW Fury (2007)
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 156/13 164/15.2 172/17.6 180/20.4
Sidecut: 124-81-112 (156) / 124-83-113 (164) / 124-85-114 (172) / 124-87-115 (180)

Manufacturer's Description of the Salomon XW Fury:

"The one ski quiver. The Fury will take you anywhere, anytime, and with the confidence to charge hard all day. Complete with Smartrak Control interface and the 914 binding."

Ski-Review's Verdict:

Hopefully, any "holdouts" will abandon the old "Boot-lock" and discover how great some of the new Skis can perform when skied the way they were designed to ski.

R.I.P Pilot (Justice was swift) and with the new binding/lifter system, better skiers will no doubt enjoy having the enhanced sensitivity that the Pilot lacked, so  they can enjoy Salomon's new X Wing series of ALL Mountain skis and ski them with more precision and finesse.

Comments from some of our Test Team:

  • The Salomon XW Fury is easy to ski, and enough ski for good skiers who ski everywhere. The new binding, which is more like the old one before the dreaded “Pilot” delivers adequate feedback to the skier, and makes the Fury FUN for those Salomon fans looking to replace their old X Screams.
  • A nice light feel with great Cruising capabilities. Medium to long radius are the default turn shapes.
  • Ski Eastern ice AND Western steep and deep? The Fury is a great choice as long as you don’t crave quick short turns.

Regarding the Pilot Binding and its demise?

Thank you Salomon...hate to say we told you so.

Testing skis is admittedly very subjective, and we acknowledge those who liked the Pilot system and the forgiving qualities that it offered. It would have been put to better use on skis designed for less technical skiers, delivering them from their lapses in balance and making skiing easier for them as they work on their ability. As for the Men and Women that know how to "work" the whole ski, and prefer the subtle edging and pressure adjustments served up by today's responsive ski-boots...Salomon has done what we knew they would, (at least hoped they would) and they have done it REALLY well on their 07 skis.

The X Wing fury skis are an all mountain ski that performs in the powder. It is wide enough and it is also nimble.

Salomon X-Wing Fury

Skied the X-Wing Fury in a 172. The shovels are fairly soft and a little (only a little though) bit sketchy at high speeds. Would be interested in any comments from anyone on the 180 length of the XW Fury if this is still the case. Grips well enough on the groom or regularly conditioned pistes which surprised me for a ski so wide although 'the norm' seems to be growing by 10 cm a year at the moment.

I'm 5'11 and weigh 170.

Apparently there is another Brian...for those of you who have been asking.
And he also agrees with the test results on some of this year's products.
Let's see how global we really are. Maybe we can all start sharing opinions while also letting other readers know WHERE the testing was done?

Back to the ski itself. Has anyone more feedback on the demise of the Pilot, or was our test team really far off base in our disdain for the now obsolete Pilot?

Scream 10 Pilot Defender

Forgiving? Yes. Snappy and able to hold an edge at spead as well. I've skied for 23 years. I must not have the "keen feel" some who bag on the Pilot system have. I've been more than happy with the ski and I am a very technical skier and all over the mountain.

Sorry ..... you sell it short.

To Pilot or not to Pilot

Hey, we never said it didn't work. We just said we like to be able to work the length of the ski with more precision. There are a lot of skiers who bought into Salomon's now defunct "2 pivoting rods" idea, but it did not live up to to the expectations of a lot of skiers who are now shopping for "new and improved" and wish they could still have the Scream without the extra degree of separation. The X Scream (Original no Pilot version) was sold out in most areas for 2 years running, and I have friends who have kept a pair solely for skiing the softer snow in western U S and Canada. BUT, for hard pack and ice, Eastern U S and Canada, try something torsionally stiffer, with a little more sidecut, and see what you think. You might just be a believer, and if not, we salute your individuality and it should be easy to find a few extra pairs with very little mileage on them.
Namaste.

Pilot to No Pilot

(AKA) Scream 10 Pilot Defender here. I bought a pair of the X-Wing Fury for pow skis, pow skis that can ski the groomers if needed. Your review is right on for the X-wing for the most part. X-wings want to make wider radius turns and they are very stable once on edge on the groomers. If you like to snap quick, short radius turns on the steep groomers, the X-wing is not the ski for you. I have not had a full blown powder day with the ski. I skied them in a few inches of fresh and they performed well. (Alpine Meadows) The X-Wing will not be the one quiver ski I hoped it would be.

So, I am looking to replace my Scream 10 Pilots with a newer ski. Most of my skiing here in California is on groomers, steep. I do ski fast but I enjoy busting out some quick turns on the very steep. I need a ski that is quick and will hold an edge at speed, any suggestions?

I still enjoy my Scream 10 Pilots by the way, I can afford new skis, so I figure I might as well go for it. Life is short. :)
