Dynastar Speed Omeglass 64 (2004)

The Speed Omeglass 64 is not a ski to be taken lightly.  Considering the cost it should not be.  My first experience of them was on New Year’s Day 2003, so I was not expecting the most enjoyable of experiences, however within 10 minutes I was asking the price!

Model: Dynastar Omeglass Speed 64 (02/03)
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 152/11 157/12 165/13
Sidecut:
113-64-102

Manufacturer's Description:

"Advanced through Racers seeking the latest short turning and SL performance."

Ski-Review's Verdict:

On the piste they are about as stiff as skis come; incredibly stable at high speed even over lumpy snow, and inspire almost frightening amounts of confidence in your own ability.  The fantastic edge control common to all Dynastars in this category is incredible and carving a turn becomes as easy as leaning one way or the
other.  With the short lengths and ridiculous side cut the skier has to be careful when turning for danger of flying off the side of the mountain!  Bear in mind this is true of the new 165cm model tested here.  The FIS increased the minimum length of slalom skis to 165 for men so this model was released for the 02/03 season.  Previously women had the 152 and men the 157, but now men and women have to plump for the 157 and 165 respectively.

However to get the most out of them (and if you are considering owning a pair you will want to) a certain amount of aggressive skiing is necessary so, if you’re a skier who prefers long gentle runs then these are not for you.  However if you are of the ilk that likes pulling off crazy sharps turns at mach 3 on the fall line of a steep red then you will not find a better ski.  The tail however is extraordinarily flexible considering the overall rigidity of the rest of the ski.  So, keeping forward and off the backs is normally a good approach as the results from sitting back can be quite hair raising.

One cautionary note; these are skis built for slalom (it is 'rumoured' that the Olympic slalom in Salt Lake City was won on Omeglass...) and therefore are designed for use on the piste.  Off piste skiing on the Omeglass is a bit tricky (mainly due to the factors that make them such a great piste ski!).  An off piste novice would be well advised to go for a longer, softer, ski much wider in the waist if they fancy the back country.

Conclusion?

Stiff, insane turning radius and lots and lots of fun to those who know what they are doing.  At the other end of the spectrum, a specialist tool whose results speak for themselves.

Hi all from Spain, I have omeglass 64 size 152 and I'm 6'1 I don't like high speed skiing but I love carving maybe is contradictory but I never ever felt so many good sensations on the slopes, I love turning and the way they help me to turn. They are so fun to drive I'm in harmony is like dancing on the snow.

Great slalom ski

Best skis I have ever used and these are only 152's. They turn like they are on autopilot, they are stable at GS speeds and they are just plain more fun than a barrel full of drunk monkeys. These skis are unreal.

Amazing

I tried these skis on plastic and they were absolutely brilliant, the best skis I have ever tried and were even better in the slalom however I did find they got a bit sloppy if they are not sharp. I cant wait to try them on snow, I would recommend them if you are looking for a fast race ski.

I have 157, superfast, bite like a pitbull...tried many high end racers from salomon, elan, rossignol and volkl... Dynastar omeglass 64 is the best so far, the y have so much of a character... although they must be always sharp and tuned and not so great when there more than 20 cm of snow above the course... Love them...

Wow!

Hello, my name is Madeline and I live near a ski dealer. I have had great results for years, but the dealer said that these were great if you are in the racing team. I rented them and said I would buy them for any price, and now I ride them all the time. Cuts short edges, smooth, and fast!!! I LOVE THEM!

A poem about how great these skis are

Whish, whir, gone! I am a blur with these skis.
I tease others with my speed, hair flying,
I gain an amazing amount of confidence.
Faster.
Faster.
I am there, then gone.

Awesome power and quick turning

These skis are powerful and unbelievably reactive. Love 'em! There really isn't much better of a ski for tight turns on groomers or icy pack. Off piste is a different story. Due to the extreme rigidity and narrow waist, they are tough to maneauver through powder or through large firm bumps/moguls. These are definitely a specialty ski.
