What's in a name?  In this case . . . .  EVERYTHING

How fast can you ski?

Model: SuperSpeed
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 161/14.3 168/15.9 175/17.6 182/19.3 189/21
Sidecut : 115-70-99
Length tested: 175 & 182

Unlike its stablemates, the 6 & 5 Stars, (which I like in 168cm) this ski is better in a longer length.

Fast, stable and somewhat demanding! One great ski that delivers solid edge sets and allows some varied turn shapes (longer arcs are the default with this ski) with text book transitions. The Superspeed flows from 1 turn to the next, or use the tails and enjoy the pop they can deliver.

We so often use the car comparison when relating the characteristics of new skis.

So . . . the Super Speed is the Bentley Turbo or maybe the Vanquish. If you’ve always wanted to know how Super G feels, and you can get past the price, get on a pair of Superspeeds.

Conclusion?

Another BEST pick. (Expert level only) ****

Speed Demon?
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2004-11-11 12:51:40

I don´t take the superspeed-image of the Speed Demon these skis are given. Any serious user of serious GS skis would take them as a fairly comfortable allrounder - like I did with 175 cm.
Don´t overdo the demonization of the ski! "A ski for the best knowing no speed limits" - they are the WC-downhillers and they use DH skis :-)))

I was wondering whether you (Guest re: Speed Demon?) had a chance to try out the 182's. I am thinking about purchasing a pair (175), but have heard that the 182's are the best size. 182cm sounds like a lot of ski to me. Do you have any insight?

Superspeed

Another super crud-buster. Very stable (almost as much as the Head), but not nearly as easy in the bumps. This ski prefers long arcs, but can be made to carry out short turns with the right input. I had the worst bump-problems on this ski. The tip is quite stiff and would tend to throw me back if I hit a bump head-on. The even more stable Head im75chip did not throw me around this way. This ski is a fast stable crud-buster, but seems less versatile than the Head (to me anyway). I would disagree with several reviews that say this ski is only for long turns. Short turns are obviously more work, but are very "doable". I would caution, stay away from the bumps unless you are a very strong, very skilled bump skier.

Size

I am planning on getting a pair, not sure what size to get, 175 or 182. I am 6 feet tall and 205 pounds. I have had no problems skiings Xscreams and skiercross's at the 189/191 length. Any help would be great.

VOLKL 724 PRO

Any feedback on these?? I am a girl at 5'9"/135lbs. who has gone from years of skiing w/a bit of racing on 200 GS skis 'w/the boys' to 187 Salomon X-mountains which were a dream compared to 200cm straight skis but am now in search of a new ski that allows me to ski 'old style' aggressive GS type of turns at speed and prefer steeps + powder and crud...only do bumps if forced or w/ a foot of the fresh stuff!!...help????? Any suggestions? I've been told the Volkl 724 pros may be a good choice....any suggestions on length? --want stability at speed....

Superspeed
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-02-06 15:40:49

Just demoed the Superspeeds yesterday after a ski rack "malfunction" on the way up to Mammoth. I wanted something for the bumps, but the tech said they were out of just about everything in my size that would be an expert ski, good for the bumps. The only thing they had left was the Superspeed. The tech said I would probably hate them, and they would be horrible in the bumps, but I could take them and ski over to the Main Lodge and trade them out. Well, I ended up skiing these all day....mostly in the bumps. They rocked. I believe their forte is GS turns at speed, cuz they just rocketed down the slopes and held like a car on the Matterhorn at Disneyland. But I was surprised at how good they were in the bumps. I did find myself getting behind them at first on big bumps, but if you just drive them hard and stay forward they will shred. Super responsive. Get in the back seat and they turn on the turbo. You'll need to be pretty strong to stay with them. My legs weren't sore or burning at the end of the day (like another poster stated), and I skied them really hard. I've got really stong and conditioned legs though.

Me: 42 yo, 6', 185, expert, aggressive type III, if there is a choice of bumps or not, I'll choosed the bumps.

I'm trying the Rossi B1 and the 6 star today.

I just recently had my 175cm Six Stars stolen ( At 7Springs). I am 18 years old, 5'8", 185lbs. I manhandled the six stars with ease. I plan on getting a pair of these. What size do you guys recommend? I am very aggressive and will be using these for high speed and a few steep powder runs on the side once and a while. Those Six Stars were amazing skies.

Awesome
Written by billski on 2005-02-12 12:40:45

Demo'd these and found them awesome. Entirely stable at speed, I never felt out of control. They love to bite the edge in a carve. Skied in Northeastern hardpack Frozen Gran with an icy spot here and there - never slipped once. and Lordy, are they fast. Doesn't like flat and straight; tends to wobble on the straight, always needs to carve.
I have tested 5 star and found that the 5* edge and carves similarly to the SS, but the SS is stiffer. Not for the bumps. I'd buy them in a heartbeat if not for the $$. Now to test the 6*, and look for a great end of season deal....

Too stiff for me
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-02-17 05:47:30

I'm a all mountain advanced skier, 6'2" 195 lbs., on the verge of expert. I demo'd 168cm Super Speeds for 3 days on snow ranging form hard pack groomed to a slushy mix with crud later in the days. I own last years Rossignol RPM 100 and generally like skis on the stiffer side.... Though I found the Super Speeds to be too stiff for me. I had a hard time truly carving a clean small to medium radius turn without imparting a lot of extra lower leg rotation or expending a large amount of energy to really load up the skis in a turn. The super Speeds were indeed fast and felt very stable through crud. I'm not saying that the skis aren't good, just make sure you demo them before spending the money. PS... My primary skis now are now Scream Limiteds in 170cm. Even though the Scream limiteds get fairly lack luster reviews online, they are truly a fun ski that has no short commings for me. All of my friends that have tried them love them. They have either bought them now or are looking for season deals on them... And some of those guys truly own the mountain.

Super-G
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-02-24 09:40:10

I'm 6' 180lbs expert skier. These skis truly are speed demons (the ones you can actually buy from your local store). Super-G was never in my repertoire, but now it is... I ski these 182cm, which I think is the one and only size for Superspeed (having demoed also 168&175). Surprisingly easy to ski, loves the big arc and speed, stable in unstable conditions and unrelentingly racy.

in the name of speed
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-02-28 18:12:24

I demod the superspeeds on saterday at okemo. The 168cm. I fell outright in love. I am 6'205lbs and a strong fast skier. I don't do bumps my knees can't handle them but highspeeds is where I spend all of my time. For me these skies were perfect they held an edge accross almost anything at any speed and had a wonderful smooth carving feel that I have been craving. the next day I bought the 175 which I liked much better than the 168 to me they felt more stable when the skies were pointed striaght down the hill but they held the edge and carved just as well as the 168's if not better. If steep and fast is what you are looking for I can't recomend these skies enough.

Everything That I Expected...
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-03-03 14:45:23

I finally laid down the cash for the Superspeeds in 182cm. The 168 and 175cm length had been previously demoed. At 6'4" and 225lbs my everyday ski is a 175cm 6 star but I wanted something different in length and radius. I found that I could ski the shorter lengths like the 6 star (long and short radius with a bit more effort). The local ski shop pro recommended the 182cm and I found this length to be perfect. Super stable at speed with super powerful turns. The rebound energy helped with the transitions from turn to turn. I never driven a Bentley but I can imagine the same feel. You feel so confident on edge at high speed that it actually felt slow (but I know it was fast as I was passing the others on the hill). Felt like riding in my grandfather's Caddy. Only gripes are they are a lot of work at slow speeds and in short radius turns so you can get tired. I also found that the ski is very heavy but it helped plow through rough snow. Hey, it has got to be the coolest ski on the mountain. Reminds me of Ken Read and Steve Podborski skiing on those Fischer downhill skis with the open tips.

VolKl Superspeed

I have been skiing for most of my life and had not made the transition from my skinny skis to shape skis. I presently ski on Rossi Viper x at 198cm length and love the ski. I decided I needed to demo shape skis to get a feel for them. I tested 4 different pairs of shape skis and hated them. Finally, the late pair I demoed was the Superspeed at 175cm length. Wow! the ski will crank when you want them to. This ski is not for the timid. You must pay attention to the ski all the time to stay on top. I triend them in the bumps and they will turn, but you have to command them to do so. My final test was through a race course; a few runs on my Viper Xs and then on the Superspeed, the Superspeed was faster. This ski loves long, fast, arcing turns. If you want a fun fast ride and you are a very good skier, this is your ski.

I ski Vermonts groomers and must say this is the best ski for that. I hugs the turns at high speeds. Lets face it this is not the age of short poppy turns and you wan the best carver especially if you are skiing the wast. I think I will compliment this ski with a softer ski to ski the 12 till 2pm shift on the bumps and the trees. powder and of course out west.

From demo to the shop
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2005-04-04 18:47:25

I've been looking at these all year and finally demo'ed them Saturday at Kirkwood. I fell on my very first turn and thought "what the h***". I fell in love on the second turn. At 6'2" 190lbs. I wanted to try the 182s but they only had 175s. The tech said the they would be perfect and they were. I got more vetical in the first two hours than most people get in a day. Turns were smooth, powerful, and easy. The stability was unbelievable. There was no need for me to go longer and I like the smaller radius. Medium and long turns were best but short turns were not nearly as bad as other people have said. Just don't expect to spend a lot of time in moguls - they are way too stiff and unforgiving. I found a middle to slightly forward stance made for incredible carves, but it was also fun getting back on the tails too. I like these so much that I stopped at a shop on the way home and bought a pair. It helped that they were blowing them out at $550 (compared to $1200).

hot sticks
Written by billskis on 2005-11-24 12:48:24

Spent all last season demo-ing. Ski primarily hardpack New England. These sticks left me grinning, at 49 years young! Mid life crisis, don't know, but I did find myself moving up the performance level. I call them my mountain magnets. They just hold on at speed. And carve, boy do they carve. If you like a stiff ski, you'll just love these. I usually ignore bindings, but step into these markers and the "click" lets you know y ou are there. I'm 170 lbs and didn't have any probems with 168cm's.

I got myself into some interesting skiing, but never lost control, always felt steady at speed.

I don't know why, I'm not muscular, but I had no problem keeping them in control, and never thought they were "too much" like some reviewers. Reminded me of the old Rossi Stratos and the Dynamic VR17's.

This is my first full launch into shaped skis, I had a crossover pair from about 7 years ago when they were still figuring out the best "shape". I had no problem at all with these, except I didn't want to go in when the lifts closed.

Ok, as a former racer, coach, and instructor, I know what a good ski is. The Superspeeds are fantastic!! I bought a pair of 182's and love them. They are awsome at high speeds, better then most GS race skis, especially when you are blasting down in the real world of loose snow, ice, and small bumps. I love these things. I keep my new Volkl slaloms in my house for those days I want to get some cardio in!! The superspeeds get my heart going too much!! Buy them and rip'em!!

Amazing

I demod these yesteresday at Holiday valley, they are quite possibly the best skiis i have ever tried. I plan on buying a pair soon but still debating on the size (168 or 175). I am 5' 10" and 185 lbs. any recomendations? Is there any difference between the '04/'05 model and the '05/'06 model?

Precision
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-06 01:35:55

These skies are extremely precise and demand permanent attention. They do exactly what you tell them to do so you better know what you are doing. It will either reward you with a great ride or a face plant. I had great fun in moguls and found the ski very responsive, albeit not at lower speed. It allowed me to pick the best line between moguls and I was able to pull a few turns off I wasn’t able to do before. There might be skies which are easier in moguls, however I doubt these allow you to ski at the same level as this ski does. I recommend the Superspeed to experts who like a little challenge and want a ski which helps them to get even better. Not your first choice in deep powder, however still o.k. I can not say much about fast turns on groomed runs, not my style.
A detuned alternative could be the Völkls Allstar or Attiva 5 Star, for those who like a more forgiving ride.

Fast Fast Fast....nough said
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-03-19 04:27:58

First off I am a strong intermediate. I have been sking a little over a year when I picked up a pair of these used at our local ski swap. I love these for groomers but once the snow gets chopped up late in the afternoon they are a real work out for me. I am 5'10" and 185lbs I got these in a 175 and as long as it groomed I can go as fast as I want with total confidence. I don't ski bumps or powder so I don't know what they are like there. I think this is more ski then I will need for a few more seasons.

Ski area is Mt Bachelor.

Oh my!
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-09-04 19:19:42

I am an Advanced Skier. These skis are, like the reviews say, demanding. They take anything you throw at them. Flying down the hill at 60 mph doesn't even faze these wicked skis. No rattling or anything besides smooth sailing. It almost scared me how smooth you could ride at fast speeds. Good pick!

The Best!
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2006-12-01 13:15:09

These skis are the best skis I have ever owned and I have owned many. I ski the coldest iciest mountain in New England. These skis don't give an inch. Yes they do take strong legs and work in Northeast bumps, however, on the days when we do get powder I have had a blast on every trail. I'm trying to figure out how to buy a second pair. Skiing 50+ days in New England has worn them down.

Written by Ski Review Guest on 2007-01-29 11:25:22

I have skied for 45 yrs and these are by FAR the best ride I have ever had! Nobody comes close to keeping up with me and that is no lie.

Need I say more...

My second pair and I love them
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2008-01-22 10:17:08

I have stood by my attitude to purchase rather than rent, this applies to skiing very much. I got these as a purchase of last year's model. Was I ever happy, I get great control, good stability and speed. I hope to have these for another 5-7 years.

Better than expected
Written by Ski Review Guest on 2008-02-19 01:24:25

age 65, weight 162, ski most of the mountain,,skiied this in the 175, turns short radius with not much effort, soft bumps really fun, likes it when you push them.
Fast, but I was able to ski faster downhill on my old GS rossi skis
than my younger and better skier
son in law on my volkl superspeeds, nevertheless, a great ski, and my favorite on the groomed, and 4-8 inches of new snow..little stiff for soft and deep
but can do with effort..RG

168 Volkl Superspeed Skis

These are a pair I bought 3 years ago, on sale as last years model. So far, the best pair of skis I've had. I'm a 6'2" 180 pound person, so, I now have strong legs to harness the skis. I hope they last me a long time.

I have skied these in 175 for five years and love them still.. They are as stable as the super-gs I once owned on and are very versatile. They accelerate quickly and I have a couple of times found myself chasing them when I have gotten in the back seat
