Atomic Metron EX / M:EX 2005 Ski Review

Jan. 2nd, 2005: I just demoed the EX @ 165 at Jackson Hole. I had never skied anything this short. I am 6’ 1", 195lb and an advanced skier.

Model: Atomic Metron EX (M:EX)
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 165/? 175/19 185/?
Sidecut : 118-84-111
Length tested: ?

Manufacturer’s Description:

"With an all-new mold that delivers more surface area than any other Metron model, the M:EX builds on the legancy of the 10:EX, the most freeride-driven Mentron model.  The EXS classic mid-fat dimensions work with a proven carving sidecut to provide total all mountain freedom.  The addition of beta puls titanium smooths the beasts hit, letting you power high-octane turns through anything from wind-buff to death cookies."

Ski-Review’s verdict:

We had 20" of fresh pow and this ski had incredible float and response in the glades. On Black moguls, my transitions from edge to edge required far less effort than I can ever remember.

On groomers, large radius turns at speed were smooth and chatter-free… the edge hug was awesome, I guess thanks to the Ti pulsers that seem to push the edges down on all terrain. The weight of this ski was not an issue and may be helpful: they blasted through crud without being diverted.

I think the add’l. 8mm of waist make the EX the way to go in the West, instead of the B5. The demo guy also said that the B5 has such a wide, massive shovel/short turn radius that it is more tentative and jerky at speed.

My Volkls will soon be benched in favor of this radical and highly effective ski. I can’t wait until my partially torn MCL heals so I can get back out there (not the ski’s fault… an unexpected jump off a large rock/small cliff!)

Had nothing but hard pack at Copper Mt. and these things held the hard pack and ice really well.  I wound up on a double black mogul run and I thought I’d have a problem since these things are stiff and heavy (and I’m 57 years old), but they were excellent.  I liked them best with somewhat softer boots.  Great skis.

This ski was absolutely amazing for me.  I am just getting back into skiing after a short time off.  I like to be to have a ski that i can go anywhere with and these my friend were it.  I am 5’9 female weighing 134lbs and the weight of this ski was not an issue for this chick.  I was able to do double black diamond runs with no problem whatsoever.  THEY ROCK!! Bianca Smithers, BC CANADA!!

I demo’d these guys for a week, and the performance is everything as described.  The only complaint was how heavy they were.  Carrying these from the car to the slopes was a definate chore.  Any one know what the actual weight of the ski is?  How does that compare to other skis?

Skied these in Austria. I am an expert skier around 190lbs and ski everywhere on the mountain. These skis are the best I have tried this season. Incredible grip and stability on the piste and good float and power outside it. The best allround ski I have skied so far.

The demo binding for the Atomic (the Neox) has a lot of metal in it, thus the additional weight.  With the retail binding, it’s really no heavier than any other ski.

I bought these instead of the head monster iM 75 because of the fact that my local dealer couldn’t get me the monsters in time, plus I got a better deal on the metron. With the monster iM75 as a reference I’d say that I was pleasantly surprised hitting the slopes with the metrons. Wide enough to work exceptionally well in deep powder but still enough sidecut to work satisfying in the piste.  Incredibly stabile even at high speeds on edge. Keep in mind though that because of the wide body you need to keep the edges sharp otherwise you’ll lose the grip going through turns and icy pistes will be a nightmare!

I am an expert skier in Colorado; 6? x 183 lbs skiing the M:EX in 175.  I skied these exclusively this season after demo?ing many skis last year including the fantastic Volkl 724 Pro, which are also wonderful!  I am extremely happy with the performance of the M:EX on and off piste.  I have read several things in this string that are quite true, keep?em sharp and ski?em hard.  It?s quite a thrill to bust out of the deep stuff in the trees and then carve huge unbelievably fast and stable turns on the groomers back to the lift!  The can be quick as well, just requires a higher level of athleticism to travel from edge to edge on the fatter waist.  Well worth the advantages and from what I have seen the ski is a relative value.  Highly recommend.

I demo’d these in Vail and loved them so much I purchased a pair and have bought them back to Australia. Conditions here can vary significantly and Ive found these skis to handle the lot - ice, crud, slush and pow pow. I absolutely love the ski, but they are a pain in the butt to lug through airports etc. A small price to pay? I think so!

Hello all.  I live in Montana and I am trying to choose between a Rossi B3 and the Atomic M:EX I am 160lbs, 5’8 and an advanced-expert skiier.  I am coming off of race boards (Volkl P60).  I am looking for a good all mountain ski.

I just moved to Denver and I have not been on the slopes for 14 years.

I want an all mountain ski I can grow into and enjoy.

Would anyone reccomend this ski to a former all mountain boy?

I owned a pair of Atomic 10:EX’s and really loved them.  After nearly 90 days on the mountain I decided I needed replace them, as they seemed to have lost some of their snap.  I purchased a pair of Metron EX?s hoping they would be an improvement.  While I liked some things about this ski better, like the tighter turn radius and softer flex in the moguls, I found that the tip did not hold on diamond and double diamond groomed runs.  Also, it lacked the power and snap of the 10EX as well as the crud busting muscle.  I am sure this is a skier weight issue and lighter skiers would not have this problem on the M:EX.

I am a strong 205 pound skier and ski between 20 and 35 days a year.  I have been skiing for almost 40 years including several 40-75 day years and routinely ski very fast.  I have since replaced the M:EX with the Darren Rahlves limited edition, basically it is the old 10EX with a new top and more rounded tail as well as Beta 4 construction.  I love this ski.  It is a better choice for anyone over 185 lbs that likes to ski fast over varied terrain.  As one review of the 10:EX said several years ago, ?move over, the biggest burliest ski has just entered the building? and that describes the Darren Rahlves Limited Edition.  I generally buy 1-2 new pairs of skis a year, and almost always Atomics as you just can’t beat their stability and snap of Beta 4 construction.

I’m 35, 5 foot 9 and 225lbs. I’m a former football guy, and run and bike 4 days a week.  So ithe weight is mostly all power.

In my youth I reced the bumps.  Now I’m an expert level all mountain skiier that loves the bowls, glades and bumps untill my knees hurt.  I took 10 years off skiing before getting back into it 3 yrears ago.  I ski 20 days a year, which will now be in Snowmass/ Aspen due to a recent purchase there.

Last year I bought a pair of Rossi B1’s for use in the bumps, because of their easy flex.  I’ll use them on bumps and the groomers when skiing with my wife and other front side skiers.

I’m looking to buy an all mountain/ fee ride ski for the bowls and back side I need to know, for me, what is better: the metron B5 or the metron EX.

i demo’d the R:EX (...which i think is the 3 year old version of the M:EX) a few seasons ago in jackson hole.  if this is the same ski, i have to say a couple of these posts surprised me.

(background: freestyle skier from age 6-18, ski passes all through college, now get about 25-30days/year in tahoe, 5’10, 200LB’s…age32…aggressive all mountain skier…and i was about 220 when i demo’d the R:EX)

the R:EX took everything i could throw at it for 2 days (20+ runs a day).  blazing fast groomers (60mph+easy…leaving trenches and pre-jumping nolls), high speed gladed runs with small bumps and crud, narrow chutes with foamy snow.  i described it to a friend as an all wheel drive porche 911 with lift kit and 30” tires.  sooo…i’m just not buying the comment about this ski being for light skiers.

its my understanding the M:EX is the latest iterationof the R:EX…it just grew a bit….so, if i’m talking about the wrong ski…i’m wrong, but if the R:EX predates the M:EX…then i’d take some of the comments with a grain of salt.

After 2 days of skiing on my new M:EX’s, I noticed that the skis have lost their curvature when not under load. From the tail to about a few inches past the binding the curvature looks normal, then after that, the rest of the ski curves upwards (to a small degree)! Hence, when skiing on a perfectly flat surface, the front of the ski does not make contact with the surface and tends to rattle! What is all that ABOUT!?!?!

Did you take a rough over the tips digger, i’ve done that before and bent the ski’s upward in the front of the bindings.  Otherwise get’em warrantied

I bought these skis based upon the reviews.  Wish I’d have demoed first.  I think they’re great for the power skier, but too heavy for a lighter type II skier like myself.  Give great confidence when diving into steep turns, but take it out of the legs in the process.  I’m hoping to trade for some Izor 9:7s.  Overall a good ski, but well overweight methinks.

I am a 6’3 230lb racer, i Own a set of 175 M:EX.  I think these skis are amazing! They carve well on the hard pack snow well, just watch out for sheer ice.  All around they carve well for an 84 mm waist, and don’t give with high speed.  The new Neox binding and lost 1.1lbs, so i don’t think the skis are that heavy, especially compared to race skis and the bindings they have on them. Once they’re attatched to your feet you cant notice the weight, only how fun they are. I was at first nervous about them not being enough ski for my size, but now that i’ve been on them, they do it all from POW to cruisers.  I would recmmend a 185 length if you’re my size and only going POW. But Look elsewhere if you want a pure powder ski.

I have only skied 25 runs in the past 20 years, as I just started again after relocating to Colorado.

My second day out I left my K2 Omni 5.5’s in the room and grabbed a set of the Metron EX’s.

It was a 45 degree day(hardpack)  at Winter Park and both the blue and green runs were very fast.

Considering that I’m barely an intermediate after 25 runs…I loved these things.  I have only tried blue runs, but they were very fast blue runs with the conditions.

Very stable at speed (for the length) and nice control for the 84mm waist.

They are very heavy and you need to work the ski in the icy piste.  But they have great grip for a fat ski.

You will notice a long haul to the parking lot with these babies.  And you might notice a 10 minute lift with them hanging.

Feel free to do some leg raises on the ride up to get the extra quad work in.  :-)

Impressive for a heavy, fat ski in the hardpack on a 45 degree sunny day.

Ok, I read all the reviews that these skis could do everything. (before i bought them) If you are a super fit jock you may have the muscle needed for the granite slabs stuck to your boots. If you sit behind a desk 320 days, have an extra 20lb’s, and ski 15 +/-, get something lighter and more felxable before you jump into the double blacks…you will feel better about yourself…a cnote and abeer you can have them…
