Dynastar Speed Course 2008 Ski Review

A staff favorite last year, thankfully unchanged (O K, the graphics changed) and those that were lucky enough to get a pair will surely continue on them through another winter.

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

Comments from several testers . . . . .

Last year the Course garnered a huge share of rave reviews.  Thankfully, its still above the rest. The Speed Course is some of the most fun on any ski EVER. The Autodrive Flex plate from Dynastar’s World Cup skis, delivers excellent power transmission and feedback, making the Spped Course seem to ask for more from the skier.

The 17 meter radius (at 178cm) while not legal for FIS candidates, is perfect for All Mountain cruising at blistering speeds but doesn’t restrict the skis ability to make some pretty nice shorter arcs.

This is the definitive “Club Racer” ski, and that’s been proven by the previous version. They’re fast and they don’t drift out of the turn, even at “hair on fire” speed. One of the BEST, if not the best.

This is one ski that does a lot of things very well, as long as the pilot has the ability and the “cajones.” Take them to a big, steep, icy mountain and ski them as hard and fast as you can. You’ll renew some of your passion for our sport. By the way, they love Snowbird, Utah and they handle anything and everything. Get on a pair and take them to some “double diamonds.” Bring your "Skill-set" and a helmet.

I try not to be influenced by the top sheets, but I really loved the blue/red combo of the previous seasons Speed range from Dynastar - maybe this look will have to grow on me!  Personally I cannot get enough of Dynastar’s Speed tools - both this and the Omeglass - so glad to hear it has not changed significantly or been replaced!  Roll on the season!

Wow. I have been trying to find the right ski for several years now to get that feeling I had before the shaped ski revolution hit. This ski is it. The Speed Course is full of confidence and wants to go fast. It will not let you down, pulling hard into the turns at full speed. This is what skiing should be. Forget about all those “All Mountain” skis that do nothing well, you’re a real skier. Make sure you have lots of room in front and don’t plan on making too many turns, you are going to be moving. Seek out the line that takes you down a dip to gain even more speed, then cut your turn hard forcing your body way down as you are smiling ear to ear living the dream of your own GS speed run. Yeaaaahhhhh!

Just got back from Tignes, gave up my old Atomic Beta Race 9.28 and got the Head Speed Course. Mile better than anything else I tried. Smile a minute and lively.  Some of the latest carvers are a bit bovine but these are GREAT.

Rented a pair of Dynastar Speed Course from Extreme Sport in Gressoney for use mainly in the pists. (Too short length for the wealth of off pist snow this year). I was immediately surprised by these skis performance. Part of the success is the integrated binding plate, keeping your boot low to the ground for max control. The 17 meter radius (at 178cm) was perfect for my skiing, and I was seriously impressed by the stability of these skiis, even at a speed of 108km/h, according to my GPS. But most fun was to feel the immediate feedback and full control during the furiest carving turns, again due to the low gravity point of the binding and the balance of the ski design and materials.

A friend rented the Dynastar Omeglass, which he also was very impressed with. But I would value the Course characteristic more suitable for my skiing.

If I would go buying a pair of skis today, these are the closest I would look for.

I demoed this pair in St. Anton, Austria last weekend after spending a day on the Rossi Radical 140 Ti’s. I tried the latter in 180cm and found them excessively skewed toward small radius turns, almost refusing to keep a constant trajectory in neck-break spead GS turns down steep groomed slopes.

When I returned to the shop (Inter sport at the Nassereinlift for those familiar with the area)  and expressed my opinion that the Rossi’s lacked aggressiveness, the unanimous answer of all staff present was that I should try the Dynastar Course skis instead.

When i walked into the shop and told the assistant that I had changed my mind and wanted to give the Rossi’s another run for their money he advised me not to. He was so adamant that I would love the Dynastars (178cm) that he even offered to keep hold of the Rossis for me in case it turned out not to be the case.

No regrets there and full credit to the staff at intersport. Brilliant, aggressive GS turns from the onset and almost impossible to ski these at low speeds. They DEMAND speed! Excellent side-to-side grip with minimal effort, when pushed with a forward leaning stance. Very good control when executing small radius turns as well (on moguls) although more parabolic skis are probably better suited for this purpose.

Skiing off-piste with a friend who had the all mountain K2 Apaches was no problem, particularly not in shallow powder. I did struggle to find float in the real deep stuff, but then again these are Racers.

Amazing ski, highly recommended!
