Overcoming old reputations…
To a lot of skiers, Elan represents inexpensive skis for beginners and poor performing rental skis.
To judge today’s Elans from your first junior "package ski" would exclude some top performing skis from your consideration.

Model: Elan S12 Size(cm) / Radius(m): 152/11.4 160/12.8 168/14.3 176/15.9 184/17.6 Sidecut : ?
Manufacturer’s Description:
"AST providing superior edge grip, dual titanium for ultimate."
Ski-Review’s verdict:
I haven’t owned or wanted to own an Elan since 1997 (I still talk about about my SCX 163s with 80 mm of lift)
However, the company that brought us “Parabolic” is now making some
truly great skis for advanced skiers. This is not your Mamma’s MBX, nor
is it the CRX that so many people learned to carve with. This is
a great all mountain ski with tenacious edge grip and a penchant for
speed and this ski is one of the reasons Elan is now available in our
stores, (we brought in 5 Elan models at Skiis & Biikes) and that’s
says it all.
Open your mind to a new line of products from the company that made
"Shaped skis” a household word. Or cling to archaic opinions about
Elan, and miss out on a great ski at at lower price than most others in
this performance category. Judging Elan skis from their earlier models
is as silly as assuming that a new Lexus is akin to a 75 Toyota. It is
no surprise that the company initially responsible for the first
successful shaped skis has come up with a real winner in the S12. A
light feeling but powerful carver, that is comfortable in any
conditions. Very stable and tolerant of minor errors in balance. Make
NO mistake, this is a real ski, and a very good one.

I ski the S12 and it has as much edge grip as one needs. If you can give it it can take it.

Sounds good, but is it something to use in moguls since it contains titanium ? Is there not a big risk that the ski gets “hooked” ?

I recently bought the S12 and have been extremely impressed with the edge hold as well as the stability at speed. I was skiing the usual hard park/ice at Tremblant and I felt like I was turning on rails. Excellent ski in my opinion.

Having skied my ‘04 S12 fusion (168) for 2 years, I can only join the chorus and say that they’re great in all conditions!
