K2 5 Com (2007)

A little unforgiving but carves well.

Am torn between these and the Atomic Metron M:9 for my first skis. Would describe my level as intermediate. If anyone can help that would be great.

I haven’t purchased a set of skis since 1990, when I bought a pair of Rossi 4S skis (200cm).  I’ve been mostly out of skiing since then and hadn’t tried any ‘shaped’ skis until I demoed these 5-Coms last weekend. 

Holy cow, now I remember why I loved this sport so much.  I’m mostly a carver and like to ski the piste and these things seemed to turn by reading my mind (very little effort on my part).  A friend advised me of the changes I’d have to make to ski these verses the old straight skis and it made a huge difference. 

I don’t know if it’s the skis or the shaped technology, but these were fantastic on the groomed runs.  I’d have to say these were more comfortable in shorter quicker turns than on the longer ones.

I’m skiing Volkl AC4s this weekend and will likely demo the apache recons next.  That should give me a little better basis for comparison.

but K2 is great

Demoed a bunch of skis last year. apache, recon, some rossis, but settled on the 5coms. Not disappointed. EZ to turn. Im a big guy and the 174s are perfect. Great ski if your just past green, well into blue, and the occasional black run, these will do you greta for years. AND, they look great. K@ rox

I’m a ski boarder that skis about 4-5 times a year and regularly ski black and double black runs.  I’m wondering if this K2 would be an appropriate first real ski for me.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.  -jb

I’m a beginner/intermediate and this is my 2nd season skiing. I am from Maine and only ski in Maine. I am 5’8”, 175 lbs., athletic build, 42 Y.O. male. I generally like to cruise and carve up all areas of the mountain. I am a green/blue skier and wanted a ski that could help me as I progressed. I occasionally like to ski fast. These skis seem to like the hardpack, corduroy. I have not tried them out on the pow yet. I am skiing a 160 cm ski and they have a 13m radius and really have great edge hold and control. They definitely like to be ridden a little towards the aggressive side and are a tad heavy, but for a relatively athletic person you won’;t notice the weight so much. Of all the skis I’ve tried (and I’ve tried quite a few rentals) I was very, very happy with this purchase as I didn’t get to try them first, but rather just did a lot of research before purchasing. A well rounded ski.

Bought my first pair of skiis two years ago, or three seasons.  I learned on them and have become very attached.  These skiis are stable and fast.  Although I did’nt have much luck on the powder, and am admittedly unskilled in that environment, they definitely fit me for the long blue runs that are groomed.  Will be working toward black diamond this year with the Comm 5’s.  I am 57 years old, slender/athletic build, at 6’0” and 177 pounds. 

These boards do it all. Quick turns and GS, the 5 Com is stable and snappy on packed snow. I ski in the East so I can’t comment on powder performance. This ski is fun and easy on any blue or black run. I’m 45, 6’2”, and 235 lbs. 174 CM

my skis ski well great edge hold outski me 10 times.  im a decent skiier comfy on the eastern double blacks, not yet been out west.  either way they’ve filled every niche i’ve asked of them.  been in waist deep pow pow in WV, skiied well. keep our speed up thouhg.  hit upper and lower shay’s at snowshoe, skiied great there on basically ice. i do keep ‘em tuned though with good sharp edges.  only way to get the right edge is do it yourself.  (not recommended for most on this review.) either way for a 60/40 off/on piste split id recommend these skis.  they work well. if you want to go big pow all mountain , a larger waist will help but all in all these are a good ride.
