I first rode Liberty’s Helix the first year it came out and straight away it was put on my list of favourite skis.

Manufacturer’s Description of the Liberty Double Helix:

"The Double Helix is our award-winning powder and backcountry weapon that will still make arcs on the hard stuff. With elongated tips and tails and mini rocker that we call Fat Head Technology, the DH will change how you view powder and mixed conditions anywhere it snows. Opening to rave reviews last year, the Double Helix is now available in both a 190 cm and 182 cm length. We kept the signature Liberty bamboo laminate core to keep things light and powerful, while adding a quadaxial fiberglass layer for torsional rigidity at high speed. At 121 mm underfoot, these skis have massive flotation but are surprisingly agile, making for a truly unique riding experience."

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

One improvement that came to mind at the time was a fatter version, and hey presto - the following year the Double Helix was revealed.

With the same sidecut dimensions as the Helix it doesn’t carve like your normal 120 under foot fat ski, and in fact I’d go as far as to say that turn radius is impressively short for such a wide ski.  Carving, grip on piste and on the ice - not a problem, whilst having enough stiffness up front to smash through the crud while still flexing nicely in the deep.

Skiing waist deep tree lines in Japan I felt the Helix fly away with me, keeping me popping in and out of the snow and remaining quick and snappy through the trees allowing me to stick the line I wanted.  Liberty have kept it a fat tail twin tip so you can not only ride switch in the pow but allows you to stomp those back country landings.

With Liberty’s bamboo core the ski is super super light making it unbelievably easy to spin off those pillows and kickers, making me use it as my park ski of choice.

Personally with a choice of one ski for next season the Liberty Double Helix would definitely be up there.
