Salomon StreetRacer 8 2005 Ski Review

The Salomon rep said this ski is for someone who skis 3 weeks a year, but I would say – on top of that they would have to have some good experience of ‘proper’ carving beforehand before trying that in order to get the best from them.

Manufacturer’s Description:

“Leader of the new ski generation: great on piste performance for multiradius turns.”

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

They are meant for carving, and to carve properly 3 weeks skiing a year may not be enough unless you were having lessons all the time or at least for a good amount of time.

Having said that – if you do want to learn then these certainly wont make the job harder.  They ski like you would expect a high(ish) end piste carver to ski -  lots of grip on when banking but have the trademark floppiness I experience with most of Salomons offerings.  Maybe my expectations are too high?

Conclusion?

Very light, not very stable in a straight line, these need to be skied on their edges.  Not that bad in power due to the weight (or lack of it) meaning they are quite versatile.

If you live and ski mostly in the Eastern US I would definately look at another model. This ski does not perform well on the icy hardpack of the East. You have to put in a lot of energy to keep the skis in check when not on the edges. Edge grip is fine on ice but once you flatten up a little or attempt a straight run things get out of control very quickly and it becomes very very hard to control.

Out West on the ‘soft’ hardpack on piste it performs flawlesly and I tried them out on some fresh powder and was surprised how well they performed.

While I aggree with the initial review that the skis are not very stable in a straight line(you expend a lot of leg energy trying to keep them flat) I highly dissagree that this is a ski for those who want to learn to carve. Someone who does not already know proper carving technique is wasting their money. It does not tolerate skidding or intermediate technique very well and are too hard to control in a straight line. This skis one and only high point is its ability to carve.

I think you ski with your feet too close together.

these skis have a terrible name, “street racer”? who would name a ski street racer, obviously some one who makes a bad ski, i tried skiing on the street with these skis to see if they lived up to their name and i schratched them up like crazy. so, in conclusion these “street racers’” are fine for the street but when it comes to snow they dont fare too well

on these skies you can do proper short carve turns on icy hardpack only…not very stable on straight line and not very stable in higher speed and long turns either…nice skies for fun carving in the early morning on hardpack for couple hours, definitely not for allday skiing..

Having now spent some 25 days skiing on the SR 8 ia have found. In powder not bad, they are so wide at the front dont dig in much. High speed, not good must maked sure you lean forward other wise they bounce. On ice not bad at all, they just grip. On pisted slops or a few inches of snow fantastic. In slush horible, but that could be as as I hate slush.

I had very icy snow and these skis were exellent. Also with slushi snow. Makes good short and long turns. Straight line is not so good, but i don’t like that kind of tracks. I love them and bought them!

these skis really kick butt and allow effortless turning.  I agree that they are a bit hard to control and perhaps lack a bit of substance and the stability that comes with some mass, but you only have to THINK about turning and suddenly you’ve turned. I was hopping like a bunny rabbit on even shallow gradients and ice yesterday, simply amazed how easy it makes swinging yourself around.

The SR8s are a nice ski for effortless initiation of on edge carving.  They hold the line pretty well.  However, in my case felt they could hold the line a lttle better when you get on more aggressive and vertical terrain.  They were a bit too soft for me.  I would have liked them to be a little less flexible.  Great for the turn, can hold the line on double edges, but could be more nasty and keep the line on more agressive terrain.  Feel like I need to move up in stability to really jam.  It could use a bit more attitude (read-strength) to put up with really fast, hard all out skiing.

Also, took them out west to Utah.  Great on groomers, but narrow width a bit of an issue in deep powder.  In my estimation, sound carver (what it’s built for) but certainly not an all mountain ski.

Just tried the SR8’s out on an indoor real snow slope. Tight turns need more effort than should be required with this type of ski, but the larger turns flow quite well. I’m 6ft, 14 Stone and used the 165cm skis with the S711 bindings. These Skis are being offered at ?200 inc bindings down from ?350 back in January. Bargain in my view. Recommended.

I skiied these in the north east and they performed alright but as soon as I went out west they handled amazingly.  In powder they were even better.  There not bad skiis but not great either. If you just ski in the east dont get these unless carving is all you do.  Then these skiis are great.

Just like in the title - you push hard in the turns you only get quicker. Have only been skiing bout 3 years and with these can easily keep up with people who have more than a decade of experience. True they can seem a bit floppy but stick on the edges and you just get a huge speed rush. Downside - not so amazing off piste but that could be me!

This is a message for those who believe they are skiing when going in a straight line, that is not skiing and you do not deserve to write a comment about skis when you can not ski! These skis are excellent, you just need to know how to use them for example you need to be able to actually turn, not go in a straight line. These skis have an excellent radius and are very flexible perfect for carving!

I have just tried them out at an indoor real snow park and cannot believe the performance. They turn so well I felt like a real pro. They are so much fun, wish I had tried them sooner. Alan Thomas

I just tried a second hand pair of these and found them great. But what would I know…...I usually ski on Headliners! (94cm Boards)
