At 88 mm in the waist, it can get you through crap and heavy snow. It also will allow you to float on top of powder.

Which is better the Snoop, the Atomic Sugar Daddy, or the Salomon 1080 Gun/Foil?

Coming from a race background, I was skeptical about the 88mm waist of the Snoop Daddy but they managed to surprise me with their versatility. I bought the Snoop Daddy as a backcountry ski that I could take anywhere. Living in New Hampshire, it was important to me that the ski be able to bite in to the bullet proof hardpack (we don’t say ice here) as well as hold its own in the woods, crud, bumps, and pow (or what little we get). A foam core ski, the Snoop Daddy is a very light and easy to backpack ski. The featherweight coupled with the flex and width of the ski also makes it a good candidate for telemark bindings. However, if you do intend to hike with these skis stay away from Atomic’s Neox bindings. Though they may be a terrific binding, they are very bulky. I’ve mounted my Snoops with Marker Competition Freeride 14.0 bindings which are an entire pound lighter than the Neox bindings and allow for more underfoot control of the ski. I’m definitely looking forward to my Tuckerman’s trip with these skis. The only problem I could see with the ski is the thin edge. Though Atomic claims to have made the edge out of some super bad-ass, ultra hard, rock-your-face-off metal, I doubt it’s anything other than regular old titanium. The thin edge of the ski means fewer tuning sessions and therefore a shorter ski life. Though I have been wrong before, the thin edge still worries me. So in conclusion: Pros: The name. Pimpin’ topsheet. Flexy ski with good rebound energy. Light weight makes for a good hiking ski. Great grip. Plows through all conditions of snow. Cons: Flex may be spongy for heavier skiers (I weigh 150 and found the flex to be great.) Thin edge. Unforgiving; This is NOT a novice or intermediate ski. If you aren’t able to keep it under control, you will find yourself sitting on your bindings. Overall: Great for a one ski quiver. Covers all sorts of terrain with no problems. Short turns are more difficult due to the wide waist. If it comes down to it, a jump turn is your best bet.

Think snow in NH!

I demoed these for a weekend last year at WVNH and it was the most fun I had all year. Saturday we got an inch of snow an hour and these things floated like a Wakefield knuckler. Took five hours and several beers to wipe the smile off my face.

It cleared up over night and the next day was cloudless, bluebird corduroy on Sunnyside and when you laid them over on edge, it was like being on railroad tracks. I was like a dog chasing a frisbee—didn’t want to ever stop.

Gave my wife a big smile, too—she said the graphic reminded her of the ‘72 Ford LTD wagon her father used to pack the whole family in to ski every weekend.
