Dynastar Contact XT 09 2006 Ski Review

The Dynastar Contact XT 09 almost defies logic when you compare the price against other skis with the similar performance capabilities.

Ski-Review’s verdict:

Consider this ski to be a user friendly version of the Contact 10, both of which have a proud heritage, being derived from the Omecarve and Ski Cross series of the past 2 seasons. The Contact XT 09 delivers what a lot of skis promise but seem to fall short of when the snow is less than perfect, and its one of those skis that with a private lesson or two, will take middleweight skiers to a higher level of confidence and skill.

There is also taper angle to consider and with 12 mm the Contact XT 09 is VERY versatile, letting the pilot choose the radius, and release the tails easily in the moguls.

In a lot of articles, I preach the "take a lesson" doctrine. Please do not take this as a general affront to everyone’s technique, but instead consider the value of a "COACH" who can ski with you and help show you how to get the most from your equipment, while adapting your physical attributes and capabilities to the our sport in a more efficient manner.

Imagine trying to learn golf without the benefit of a qualified observer watching your stance and swing. Conversely, 1 or 2 private lessons and a few days on the Contact 9 should have you looking back at your previous alpine skills the way we remember our first car (a fond memory, but not something we want to revisit).

Our test team is very thorough and completely unbiased, so lets share some of their remarks on this BEST BUY ski.

"Solid performance and very smooth carves. Great bump ski too! Easy to ski for this level of performance."

"Stay centered and the Dynastar Contact XT 09 is a reliable friend who loves to party. Sit back and they will abandon you quicker than a wealthy “Ex wife"

The low price does NOT reflect the high performance capabilities of this ski."

Like any performance ski the Dynastar Contact XT 9 does want you keep your weight centered, as mentioned in an above quote, but isn’t that the case with EVERY ski in the higher performance niches?

What better recommendation can we offer than, "I have chosen this ski for 2 of my friends; both of whom are in the 175 to 185 lb catagory and they both aspire to ski better and ski more of the mountain."

Finally, in case there are questions on weight let us add one more point to this evaluation…over 200 lbs, the Contact 10 would be a better choice, especially if you crave more MPH.

I think the reason for the low price compared to other brands in this performance category is durability.

I added the Contact Ski Cross 10 to my quiver last year and by the end of the year it was falling apart. The topsheet started to crack and delaminate after only 15 days on the snow. I had a lot of problems with the frequency of base gouges and other things I have never encountered before.

In the end you do get what you pay for and I think there is a reason the contact and last years ski cross line is so cheap.

Granted the ski does perform very well but I question the long term durability of some skis in the Dynastar line.

Does anyone know what the Contact XT 09 is like compared to last years Dynastar Ski Cross 9? The dimension seems to be equal.

Looking for a little help.  I am 5-7 & 150 lbs. High Intermediate, have a little trouble getting the tails thru crud & bumps but love to high speed carve.  Both skis sound good. Will be heading out to Alta/Snowbird for a few days & wondering which one of these might be best.  Other thoughts welcome also.  Thanks for the great reviews.
