Line Mothership Titanium 2005 Ski Review

The first day of the Fall Line Ski Test and we had around 2 foot of fresh powder.  No point in missing this opportunity as we could not predict the weather for the rest of the week - the line rep keen to get us on his skis, so we all grabbed a pair.

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

I have to say I like the look of the Line ski range this year.  Most of the midrange models would look at home visually in any of the more domestic ski brand’s Pro series, however the Line pro models really do exuberate the word ‘Pro’.

No time for the Pro models now though…

…Enter the Line Mothership Titanium, ‘Fat Freeride’ ski.  Pick up one of these and ‘Fat’ is not an exaggeration.  An interesting experience as I spend most of my snow time on race skis.  I had always been a little skeptical of Line as a ski manufacturer as they come across as just another ‘cool’ ski brand.  These were what you could call an eye opener to me— long, super stiff due to the titanium top sheet and, well… they were awesome!

I could fly through the powder as it seem like I had a couple of snowboards strapped to my feet due to the width underfoot.

When I was younger, I remember watching a ski video (I cannot remember the title – it’s irrelevant anyway) where the skiers were all raving about a special type of turn called the “Smear Turn”*.  Basically in involved dropping your hip in the snow to use it like a break.  I have looked for skis ever since where this was possible, and bingo – I find them.

* Special thanks to Peter Thomson & John White for pointing out the correct spelling of ‘Smear’ and for mentioning the skier who made it famous - Scott Schmidt.

The snow was a little heavy but this posed no problem to the Line Mothership Titanium.

Conclusion?

This ski suits someone who is a powder hound through and through and rarely if ever looks for any other type of terrain.  Where the groom is just something unfortunate which has to be dealt with on the way back to resort.  Hardpack? Moguls? What?

Awesome Backcountry ski! This ski just plows right through the powder. Its not to good though in Moguls, and hard pack snow. I would stick to the backcountry with these skis. But Line makes awesome skis. If looking for an all mountain ski I would go with the Chronic, Pro models, or Assassins. I own a pair of Chronics, Mick Nicks, Assasin MTX, and Skogen Sprangs and also the Mothership. My favorite all mountain ski would have to be the Chronics. The Motherships are sweet skis though. LINE skis are awesome.

Well, got a pair last spring, and thought it was going to be a big pow day with 2 feet of dry.  Well, got there a day late and brought these as my only pair.  Skied ok, until I took them up to about 40 MPH on a groomer.  Big, Bang Boom.  Hooked an edge like I’ve never seen in my life….

Looking forward to a 3 -5’ dump to romp through..
