Salomon X-Wing Hurricane 2008 Ski Review

The most versatile expert level ski of the X-Wings, this broad cruiser is also the most accommodating when it comes to turn shape and control. A softer flex makes the waist feel narrower when you want to hammer out some short, quick arcs. This may lower the speed limit when compared to the Fury, relative to the skier’s weight, (the new Fury can be work) so most skiers looking for versatility would be well advised to save a few bucks and choose the Hurricane.

Manufacturer’s Description of the Salomon X-Wing Hurricane:

"Rock you like a Hurricane! A lighter weight, softer flexing version of the X Wing Tornado. A great choice for mixed conditions, with great performance on and off piste. Float on the deepest powder or cruise on the groomers. The Hurricane is right at home and loves to ski as much as you do. The new Hurricane is a real All Mountain, any condition ski. With a woodcore monocoque construction, this ski is similar to the Fury, but conveys a more forgiving feel. The 83mm waist allowing you to ski anywhere on the mountain with ease and forgiveness."

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

The 2008 Hurricane is the 2007 Fury, and it’s lighter than most skis in this category. Salomon has done great job of building some beef and torsional strength in this ski while keeping the weight down so the skier can experience a light easy feel from a wider ski that will float through the deepest powder.

Uncommonly easy to ski and the wider dimensions are not apparent when you get on them and ski them aggressively. Nice blend and a ski that is equally at home on the groomers or in major dumps of powder.

For “full tilt boogie” skiers, will love the Hurricane for its talent to perform anywhere, in any desired turn shape and terrain.

Light ski, very light…  Skied at Cannon today and was impressed with ski’s versatility.  Flotation was good and the ability to cut through crud was impressive.  Ski holds well when opened up.  Have been on Elan Rip Sticks and the Hurricane can cruise for a wide ski!  Not much ice today, suspect it to be pretty good on ice considering size of ski.  Last week I skied the Head i78 monster, good in the bumps and soft snow but not as stable as the Hurricane and Salomon was fine in the bumps and soft snow.  Nice ski.. advanced skier, 195lbs. skied Hurricane in 172..

Just bought last years Fury(this years huricane). I also demo’d this years Fury. Big differences indeed. Last years feels lighter, quicker, and definetley more forgiving. Easier to ski in the bumps and will float better because of the softer overall flex. NO WHERE near as good in the crud as the more powerful this years fury. I bought the 172cm last year fury and I demo’d the 177cm new fury. 6ft 185lbs 36 year old expert. Two different skis indeed. New Fury is fun but just alot more powerful, stiffer, more stable, and better edge grip on firmer snow. Hurricane will be alot more agile, nimble, forgiving, and energetic at slower speeds. Great on groomed as long as the snow is softer. Will also be a better floater but not a better crud/fast ski.

Just had them out one day.  The integrated bindings are mounted awfully far forward, leaving a long tail to try to move around. If I keep them, I’m going to have to learn how to ski all over again.

I am 5,5 100 lbs and a very aggressive skier skiing pow whenever possible, but I also need good performance on other conditions.  Should I get these?

I ski mostly blacks and double blacks.  I also occasionally ski easy access backcountry.  I have also been looking at the Rossi bandit B83.  Anything else I should be looking at?

I have Tornadoes with the same bindings. Unlike most bindings, yours are mounted on tracks (Smarttrak) and both toe and heel can be moved back or forward, simultaneously to suit your preferences. I have slid mine 1cm forward of center. Somewhat obscure tabs at the base of both toe and heel pieces can be lifted up to enable sliding the toes and heels forward or back, and can easily be accomplished on-slope. Just remember, if you move the toe one notch, you must move the heel one notch to maintain boot fit.

I just demoed the Hurricanes this last sunday in Vail.  We skied 90% powder ( awesome day) and these things really surprised me.  I got them on a whim and had no expectations.  They floated really wel considering I got the 172’s.  I’m 6 foot and 210 and an advanced skier.  I felt totally confident on them.  They worked much better then expected on the groomers.  I will consider them as replacements for an all mountain ski.

I bought my 172 cm Hurricanes last Spring, so they must be 2008 Hurricanes. I just returned from Snowmass (6 days) and Vail (3 days). Conditions were Eastern (surprise). Very little powder. No fresh snowfall. Some soft snow, but mostly the hardpack and also some frozen crud. These are not the best conditions for Hurricanes. Nevertheless, I ran my 172 cm Hurricanes through steeps (Hanging Valley Wall, Aspen Highland Bowl, Steep-And-Deep in Vail, glades, moguls, and groomers). The verdict: superb skis for soft conditions. Good in moguls, except when the moguls are very closely spaced. Very good in steeps. Superb among closely spaced trees (and I do mean “closely spaced”). Not good at all on solid ice. On solid ice Hurricanes do not hold the edge. Recommendation: Hurricanes are fantastic for Western type of skiing. For the Eastern sheer ice I would rather recommend Nordica HellCat or Volkl TigerShark, which probably are not that good in the soft Western snow. About myself: 52 yr young, 172 cm tall, 65 kg. I am an advanced skier: moguls, steeps, and trees. I only use groomers to get to my favorite terrain. Conclusion: I highly recommend Hurricanes.
