Salomon XW Hurricane 2007 Ski Review

The Hurricane is one truly versatile ski that does whatever you want in a variety of conditions. One of the tester’s favorites in the category and the price is below a lot of other comparable skis. A GREAT deal for a FUN ski.

I am 6 foot 180 lbs, looking for my next set of skiis.  I haven’t tested either ski yet, but have ski’d the XScreams for years.  Any thoughts on which is better?  Is the Tornado hands down the better ski?  I mostly enjoy bumps/powder, but occasionally don’t mind cruising a groomer.

Just spent 2 weeks on these and had a blast.

Previously owned a pair of very stiff carvers so was a bit worried these would be a bit too flexible.  However, was pleased to discover they can calve fairly fast and long turns on the hardpack.

Off-piste is even better!  Week 1 was hard and bumpy and the hurricanes absorbed it all at speed.  Week 2 had 30cm of fresh and these skis made it easy.  Even when all the pow-pow was tracked and choppy you just pretend you’re racing super-G and they’ll carve right through it.

A bit nervous on the ice, but then if you go in search of hidden ice patches then buy something else.

To the last reviewer, I don’t know why you’d buy the Tornado if you love powder as they’re a lot narrower I think so probably more piste oriented.  However you’re a bit bigger than me, so maybe you’d prefer the Fury instead.

In any case, if you shop around you’ll get a bargain on these skis, so if you don’t like, buy some new ones next year.

I finally have my new Hurricanes. Not much powder to try them on. A mixture of a few centimetres of heavy snow over icy well firm patches. A total disaster. If they were rentals I would have traded them in for another ski for the afternoon. My wife noticed that even my snowplow to enter the lift line looked weird. I have the feeling that they mounted my bindings too far forward. I had always quickly adapted to any decent ski that I try. I am a very experienced skier. I made the transition effortlessly from 205 GS skis to a pair of 180 cm Volants. Those Hurricanes were so bad that I found some excuses not to go skiing today. I am doing some internet stuff instead.

The 06 Salomon Scrambler is identical to the XWing in dimension. The binding mount aligned with boot also seems to be forward. Carves great but felt like I nose dived in powder moguls. Going to give a few more days try but may remount back 3/4”

Checked with Salomon directly. My mount is correct. Looks like they designed ski to have 55% of ski in front of boot and 45% in rear. Might need to adapt to a change in ski design.

As a patroller I have the opportunity to try a variety of skis through the season. My skiing style is very aggressive and like a ski that takes what I give it.

Toward the end of the season I finally got around to trying out the Hurricane 172’s. I was very impressed!

Conditions were hard-pack in morning changing to spring conditions in the aft. Even when it became choppy they carved without fault.

At lower speeds they can be thrown into snappy turns very easily and provide high confidence with full edging on both up and down-hill skis.

Due to their width I think they have above-average torsional stiffness providing awesome stability when hammering into GS-style turns at high speed.

I’m currently looking to get a pair for a great price. Best so far is $599 CAD. Anyone found better?

I got my 172s last winter brand new for 399 with bindings on ebay. I live in CO. and some guy had them in Greeley (no shipping). he told me I got a killer deal. I looked on ebay the next week to see what some of the hurricanes were going for, and that same guy had a reserve set on the other two sizes 164s and 180s set at 499. keep your eyes open cause they are a great ski for the powpow!!

I’m 6’0 and 170 advanced skier.  I’ve skied a 172 Hurricane in everything from crust to light pow and found it to be a great all around ski. The only limitation I’ve found is needing more under foot in heavy pow and heavy crud. Plenty stable at speeds up to 40mph then gets a little dicey.

I bought my 172 cm Hurricanes last Spring, so they must be 2008 Hurricanes. I skied them for 3 days in mid-May’08 in Blackcomb and I had to learn how to ski such wide skis. (It was the first time ever I skied wide skis.) I made a point of learning and it paid off. This time I just returned from Snowmass (6 days) and Vail (3 days). Conditions were Eastern (surprise). Very little powder. No fresh snowfall. Some soft snow in glades and north-facing steeps, but mostly the hardpack and also some frozen crud. These are not the best conditions for Hurricanes. Nevertheless, I ran my 172 cm Hurricanes through steeps (Hanging Valley Wall, Aspen Highland Bowl, Steep-And-Deep in Vail, glades, moguls, and groomers). The verdict: superb skis for soft conditions. Good in moguls, except when the moguls are very closely spaced. Very good in steeps. Superb among closely spaced trees (and I do mean “closely spaced”). Will carve on a groomer, if the groomer is reasonably soft. These skis will not hold the edge on solid ice.  Recommendation: Hurricanes are fantastic for Western type of skiing. For the Eastern sheer ice I would rather recommend Nordica HellCat or Volkl TigerShark, which probably are not that good in the soft Western snow. About myself: 52 yr young, 172 cm tall, 65 kg. I am an advanced skier: moguls, steeps, and trees. I only use groomers to get to my favorite terrain. Conclusion: I highly recommend Hurricanes as advanced all-mountain skis for soft conditions. Very forgiving and easy to use. But do not take them to solid ice.
