I’ve eyed the Stormrider DP Pro’s from afar for a long time with a kind of awe and trepidation. Desperate to try them yet not sure if could handle such a ski. Well I tested these in what could only be described as the most extreme snow conditions you could probably want to try them in—5-6 feet of horrible rotten slush. The kind of ‘snow’ that makes you want to change hemispheres or just give up skiing forever. But me? I loved every minute of it.
There was one section of off piste on the way down to the car park so nasty that none us had tried to ski it all week. I set off, got up quite a head of speed and was around 4-5 inches below the surface. I simply cut my may through some of the most horrible snow I’ve ever seen. Duncan tried to ski it behind me but all he found were the massive parallel troughs I’d left in the snow.
The Stormrider DP is one of the most ridiculously specialised skis I’ve ever used and they deserve their reputation. I just wish I could have had the chance to try them where they are designed to be used, going very very fast on very steep powder fields. If your looking for a ski to do anything else look very far away! I want a pair of these for all the right reasons.

I skied exclusively on these skis this season. I found them to be super versatile, I used them for pow, crud, spring and even skiing with my kids. I am 80kilos, 6’2” and went for the 184, which was perfect.

I skied the DP’s (193cm) all last season and I must say they rip! You really have to work in tight chutes or trees though. Overall I’d be hardpressed to find anything negative about the Stormriders.

I am 6’5” and 330lbs, former college football offensive lineman, PSIA Certified and a supervisor at a ski school in the Seattle area. Most ski reviews mean nothing to me as the person who tested the ski is at least 100 pounds and sometimes 200 lbs lighter than me. I demo’ed the DP?s for 3 days last year at Alta with conditions varying from packed power to 18? fresh powder. These were the best ski?s I have ever ridden in these conditions. I have been on Atomic line of skis sense the red sled days back in the 80?s but this year I am getting a pair of DP?s for big days and a pair Atomic SX:11?s or 12?s for recreational use. Pray for snow

If I weigh 135 lbs, and am 5’ 8 would these skis be too much and too stiff for me?

Great ski. I am 75 kg and ride the 164 and have found the DP Pro amazing. On groomers obviously a little (or a lot) of care with a 25m turning radius. Once the snow got deeper I found it could turn on a dime and loved it for tree skiing. Like your reviewers found; once it got a little wet and soggy and everyone headed for the groomers these just kept ‘truckin along’. Felt really stiff when new but seemed to have softened up. Still not a beginners ski.

I’ve skied the 184 DP pro for the last 200 of my ski days. They felt like a stiff demanding ski when I first skied them but soon I realized that the tip is quite soft and the ride is the dampest I’ve experienced. I’m 5’9”, 180 lbs and work at Alta as a patroller. As a work ski I never want anything that is a chore to get around. I’m even tossing around the idea of a pair of 201’s next year. My only negative comment about the 184’s is that they can sink in powder deeper than a foot or so.

currently skiing 174 dp’s. i m 5 6” and 140 lbs.i use these as my everyday ski and could not recommend more highly, big long carves on piste(bit shaky when very icy) and a pleasure to drive off piste! I cant help smiling to myself whenever i drive them in the powder. they cut through the crud like its not there. i think that is all i could ask of a ski. if you like fast and aggresive Go and get some now, just be prepared to hold on for your life on the icy pistes.

I’ve had DP and then DP+ since the model was created and i can tell you that this ski kicks ass so hard that u will land in a distant galaxy….
The best ski i’ve ever had to be honest in that “ride or die freeride” style.

I just demo’d a pair of 2008 DP Pro’s today. The conditions were 5 day old bake and thaw snow at Alta. I’m 6’0” and 170 and tried the 184’s. Overall a very good ski, much like a freight train when you get them up to speed. They pretty much plow through everything and provide medium shock dampening to the skier. Certainly enough to maintain balance and momentum once you’re on an edge. Incredible in the air, they seem to compensate for any off balance situation that you have on take off. Just glide and settle back to earth no matter how high/far you go. Easy to throw 360s for such a heavy setup. Really unpredictable on ice though, it’s not that you can’t hold an edge it’s that sometimes the tips catch, sometimes they wash, it’s a pretty wild ride when skiing on glossy surfaces. Lots of leg work to get through the day but I think it’s because the skiis dare you to go faster and harder than you normally would. I imagine that they completely stomp in soft hero conditions. Pretty heavy to lug around the Alta hiking scene though.
