Stockli Stormrider Scott Schmidt 2006 Ski Review

The Stöckli Stormrider "SS" is basically a fattened race ski – a true pro rider ski not a commercial imitation - and true to form with this type they are a heavy couple of planks. Stiff as if they’d just seen Micha Barton step out of the shower and almost as good looking.

Ski-Review’s verdict:

Skier stats: 170cm, 70kg, skied since 4 and 7 seasons in the French Alps.

Snow condition: Ice to slush on piste, tracked crud off piste.

Not ideal conditions to test a ‘race stock’ off piste ski but I’ve always wanted to try this or it’s big brother – the Stöckli Stormrider DP – especially after I’d just been given the Stöckli Stormrider XL – a legendary ski.

The start runs were icy but set an edge and just go. You have to stay on top of them because they are amongst the most unforgiving skis I’ve been on but they are a fast fish and truly stable compared to skis that pretend to be from the same stable (excuse the pun).

When things get slushy they just plough through it and do the same in crud. Again, they need to be skied hard the whole way down. I guess the best way to explain them is that you have to get them up to a speed where you need to really concentrate and then they will perform. Prat about on them and you’ll go front side. They are designed to be skied fast with skill and don’t do anything else.

I did manage to find some untracked stuff but not enough to really see how they performed, however I’m in no doubt that they would super G through the fluffy stuff with ease.

The Stöckli Stormrider Scott Schmidt is truly an awesome ski, one that will do exactly what it is designed for, a true honour to ski it. Now if only I can get hold of the DP…

I’m a big guy, 6.2 and 210, skied all my life in the North Cascades and now Montana.  I’ve skied these skies for a season and I can tell you they are not for the timid.  They are truly a big, fun, freeride ski that are unforgiving.  If you want a big stick, that you HAVE to ride at real speed on big pitches, then this is your ski.

I have just purchased a pair of 178 Scott Schmidts off E-Bay and fitted a set of Tyrolia Mojos. It is true that these skis do exactly what it says on the packet - ski them hard and be rewarded. I am normally a Utah skier so I was a little nervous about taking them to the lesser snow conditions of Chamonix and Val D’Isere over the 2007 Christmas break.  I am 6’2” and 90Kg (lbs?). I have 16 years of instructing behind me and am a young 42.  My biggest worry about the mid-fats was their ability to carve on groomed trails and how they handle the ever present European ice - you guys really don’t know what ice is unless you ski East Coast.  Anyway these skis are bomb proof even during short turns down icy 45 degree couloirs. I never found them wanting and skied them for 14 days without having the edges sharpened. My only word of warning is do not try them if you do not have good all round technique.  They react to good skiing but will punish poor skiers or those who buy them for their graphics rather than their modus operandi.  They carve well despite the 27m radius but hang on because they accelerate like a racing ski. Bumps are no problem and you will get an amazing pair of thighs out of a bumps session.  Powder is a pleasure as is crud, they just eat it all up and inspire confidence.  Just love them and their rarity is part of the appeal, how many pairs do you see? grab some while they are still in stock.  Stockli thank you for widening my ever present grin!!

What a great ski.  I am 6’4” and 240lbs and over the course of about 7 days in the western US, Colorado to be exact, I was able to ski the Schmidts in a variety of conditions. Overall it was a terriffic ski and easily handled anything I could throw at it. Steeps, groomers and powder/crud are the forte of this ski. I can’t remember ever skiing as fast through broken, sometimes heavy snow and having to put forth so little effort. Takeoffs and landings are a breeze as well as these sticks provide a rock solid platform on which to do both. Amazing at speed on any pitch. The only drawback to these skis is that toward the end of the day when your legs begin to get a little heavy they tend to go on auto pilot and you feel as though you are putting in a lot more effort than earlier in the day. To echo the other reviewers, they are very unforgiving. I also didn’t find them to be very good in the bumps. They can certainly handle anything but shorter turns are difficult to come by due to the wider waist and downhill racing type sidecut.  The ski tends to want to just go. Overall a great ski and should be a staple foa any big mountain skier who also like to rip it inside the ropes.
