Stockli Stormrider XL 2007 Ski Review

One of the biggest most powerful skis ever invented so I was a little apprehensive when I first tried the Stormrider XL.

Ski-Review’s verdict:

The Stockli Stormrider XL are basically a race GS ski on steroids purely designed to go fast through loads of powder. This makes them a little interesting on the piste - slow to turn but very fast! Because of this you need a lot of strength of weight to really appreciate these. We had a day of rotting slush where you had be very careful or well as the guy with me found out it hurt to fall over. However with these on my feet and a little speed I found these really stable and would handle most lumps of slush that came along. However don’t try and take them anywhere where you have to turn quickly, bumps, busy slopes, France, gates etc.

If you want a ski to introduce you to going fast through any sort of powder this is the ski for you. Don’t try them if you don’t have good strength and loads of experience as they don’t turn without loads of work. I enjoyed the Storm Rider XL a lot, but for someone looking for a really big ski, you can go bigger even if it’s only to its big brother, the Stormrider DP.

I think ‘slow to turn’ is harsh, they are - my opinion only - quick as a snake.

St?ckli run on a two year cycle typically for their skis. The Stormriders are an 05/06 & 06/07 ski, the same cycle as the Lasers in fact, so the above ski is unaltered for 2007 and you’re showing the 06 model I believe.

I tried these skis up at cardrona this season when bored with its flatness. They are not a ski to muck around, on go slow and they handle badley but there not desinged for learners! Ski with some speed on and they have the reactions of a cat! They turned as faster than any ski ive used! If you want to go slow and play on the flats go buy some park skis - these skis rock!!

I have owned a pair of these and skied them all last season - 6 trips in total - we skied Verbier in 3 foot of fresh, Tignes in all conditions from icy winter to last day of the season slush and Val d’Isere in fresh powder. These skis rock.  They turn like lightening, float and bounce through the powder, weave their way through the moguls and trees and blast down the narrowest chutes in Tignes - pisteurs, P1 and mickeys ears etc. They are not for beginners but if you can ski a bit they are very, very responsive and give you an electric days skiing.  I also demo’d K2 Apache and Rossignol B2’s and both were like wearing a pair of old slippers compared to these.  If you can find them, try them, you won’t be disappointed.  I’m 6’, 11 stone and ski the 184.

I’ve narrowed it down to the Stormrider XL, Elan 777 or Dynastar 8800. I’m a former instructor and pro patroller, but getting on in years (44) and only a weekend warrior now. Looking for something built for the Wet Coast; good for popping off cornices and through steep and deep everything from portland powder and wind crust to interior fluff. Do the Stormrider’s need too much speed for the tight trees? Please advise. Strong skier, 6’ 180 lbs, but no longer in my 20’s.

These skis are anything but slow to turn.  I found them fast to turn and hold a carve.  I’ll be buying a pair as soon as I can.

I have been skiing older Stormrider 198’s for the last 5 or 6 yrs. Just tried the XL in 194 and 184 on a fresh powder day resort skiing…. could not believe how much fun the skis were. The 184 was plenty of ski, very quick and responsive, went were you told it with plenty of speed and agility. Loved the skis and will buy them for sure.

I recently picked up a pair of these in the 184 length (I’m 5’10” 170lbs.) and I must say they are the fastest and most rewarding skis I have ever used.  These skis are not forgiving, but if you have the experience they are truly something special.  I have been on some Rossignol B3’s for the past few seasons, and my Stockli’s feel like Ferrari’s in comparison.  As the reviewer mentioned, they require a lot of strength to turn at slow speeds, but these things practically turn themselves when you start to really move.  The only negative issue with the ski is the “leather” like surface chips very easily, but as we all know this is purely aesthetic.  I highly recommend this ski.

Just got back from my first trip out with my new Stormrider XL’s (174cm).

Awesome.  The first skis I’ve owned with absolutely no apparent top end.  The faster I went, the better they worked.

I was concerned about their width at first.  I spend a lot of time with friends/family on the groomers, and was afraid these would be hard work there.  All concerns disappeared almost immediately - they absolutely rock on the groomed, and are positively eerie in the powder, trees, and crud.  I’m far from a mogul guru, but didn’t have any problems (equipment related that is…) with the XL’s.  They seem to prefer a fairly aggressive line, but carve or skid on demand.

I was also impressed with their “really decent” flexibility and forgiveness - I had volunteered to help a buddy’s daughter get her ski-legs, and spent quite a few hours skidding and plowing around on greens.  Although this is definitely not these ski’s forte, they never really bit back either.

Also, I want to praise Rick at SkiSharp.  I ordered my skis from him, and they showed up two days later (from Vermont to Oklahoma).  They were perfectly prepared - sharp, waxed, and the bindings were nicely mounted.  I’ve bought skis before (not from Rick) that came out of the box with edge dings and loose bindings, and no proof that they had ever seen wax.  I don’t mind a little tweaking, but prefer to have them perfect out of the box…

I just replaced my 5 year old storm riders with a brand new pair of 2006 XL’s and in my opinion, it’s the easiest ski in the world to turn.  I’m on the 174’s, a 50+ year old and they are an awsome ski - just skiied ice pack tonight and the skis performed great.

I bought these skis mid way through last season. I tried B2’s and 3’s, Dynastar 8000’s, all boring. The minute I got on the XL’s I loved them. I’ve skied for 30 years and have lived in the Alps for six now. These are the best ski’s I have ever owned. Don’t bother if you are not a V. competant skier, they’ll be too fast; but if you are, just buy them!

Looking for ski to replace Mantra 191.  Ski a lot & am a strong skier, I have an opportunity to pick up 06-07 XLs for a decent price $400 looking at the 184.  Live in Tahoe so on most years get to ski a lot of powder so would rather get the DPs but for double the price can’t afford. Everyone here seems to have good reviews pow, steeps and SPEED no worries?  Should go for it?  I have read no concerns except that they don’t perform going slow, anyone with expereince have concerns with high speed run outs that you may hit chop or traverse line during?

$400 is a great price and if you ski shortish turns in powder, go for it. However if you are also considering the DPs I guess you like to charge it and the XLs can dive as you get faster.

Goose, thanks for the feedback, I thinl I’ll be staying with the wider skis under foot.

I’ve always wondered how my friend managed to go past me at a rate of knots when I was already on the ragid edge on my K2 Axis S (light & super quick edge to edge slalom’ish skis) now I know. His XL’s felt like a pair of concrete planks with razor blades down the sides, absolutely rock solid, hardly had to turn at all! I really like my K2’s and didn’t think I’d get on with Stockli at all given how different they are but push had and they’ll take you there. Love it!

Has anyone compared the XLs to the Rotors?  I’m an expert skiier looking for a great all mountain ski.  Love to ski hard and fast in powder and crud, but would also like versatility for bumps and trees.  Any thoughts?  Thanks….

Fantastic - go buy some.

These are quite simply the best skis in my pack - i love my Lasers for cruising , but the Stormriders are just fast and fun. The best you can get.

I been skiing for 30+years and these ski’s were absolutely solid. They hold a nice edge. Looking to buy these bad boys.

I’m 155, 5’8”, aggressive skier. I ski these in a 184.  These skis are great in light intercontinental U.S. pow, but turn WAAAAY too much in heavier California snow.  I like to drive a hard turn, but find myself all the way across the fall line in no time with these.  With the narrow waist and soft flex, I sink into the snow, the ski bends, I turn more than I want to and lose speed.  Awesome on steep hills, trees, light snow conditions (jackson hole stuff).  Quality ski, shines on groomers, can really get that double-ski carve going.  For Cali skiing, I’ll need to find a beefier ski.

I just took out a pair of 07 XL’s and they rock!!  They have float and turn as fast as you want them to.  They bust through everything and transition between powder, crud and ice effortlessly.  I am 5’10” 175 lbs. and ski the 174.  I can keep up with racers on the groomers and ski the trees with my kids.  I’m very happy
