Volkl Unlimited AC20 2008 Ski Review

As we get used to seeing bigger numbers representing the width of the ski’s waist, we have also learned to reserve our judgment until after putting the skis through comprehensive testing. The new AC20 is another ski that feels much lighter and quicker than one would think, but looking back on the improvements in technology we have now adapted and in a lot of cases; skiers have improved merely from getting newer equipment. The Volkl AC20 is a perfect example.

Manufacturer’s Description of the Volkl Unlimited AC20:

"The AC20 is a completely new ski in the Unlimited series. This is an example of the new combination of the 3Motion system and new Power Grip construction. The AC20 has a new shape of 118-74-103mm. For true advanced skiers or those who are intermediates and want a ski that will perform well as their ability improves, the AC20 is a great choice."

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

They’re very easy to control, and the waist never feels bulky or too wide. The ride is smooth and direction changes are always at the skier’s discretion. They track well and glide through the crud, while edging is effortless and they impart good control to the skier without making constant demands for technical input.

What a great all mountain ski for those inclined to cruise the entire mountain with less effort while keeping the option of Moguls and quicker turns. The shovel goes where you tell it to, and the tail is just enough to help you finish the turn without trying to dictate the radius, or size of the arc. Big guys…look to the AC30.

I’m a type II skier weighing 205lbs and skiing on the 170 AC20.  Great ski!  Not a tight turn carver but a docile medium turn all conditions cruiser.

I demo-ed this ski today and was very impressed.  Me-type II+, aggressive skier 6-2 195.  Used the 177’s and found that they did everything very well from carving piste to getting through NW crud with ease.  Tries Apache Recon’s a week ago and found them too heavy and stiff.  The AC20’s had more of the bounce that I like going from turn to turn.  Think I might be buying a pair real soon.

I’m a type II weighing 175 lbs who just demoed the 163’s today and I absolutely loved them—gave me a lot of control and stability on all conditions.

I skied all this season on AC 2s from last year great skis on hardpacked, ice and great on bumped up trails. I feel that I can ski better with these skis.

I bought the AC-20s (163 cm)last month and skied them over President’s Day weekend. Previously I skied on rentals (Rossi, Fischer, Head).  The AC-20s are fantastic skis!  They are very stable and reassuring, and I had no problem carving with them.  I’ve just transitioned from beginner to intermediate (skied my first blue slopes that weekend), and am 150 lbs, 5 ft 9 in.  The Volkl website says that the AC-20s are for advanced skiers, and they may be, but I think they are great for someone who wants to move through the whole intermediate spectrum, from beginner to advanced, with the same pair of skis.

Type II skier, 170 ski size, 72kg weight. Great ski!!. Sometimes I felt spoiled on the mountain, because ski was doing everything for me. Light on the turns, hell it turns on its own. I can’t explain the feeling that I have while going down the slope and ski does everything that I want.

If you are a Type I going to type II skier, get this ski!!!

Con: Did not like it in fresh powder.

Quick edge to edge, lively, and stable at speed. Has been a great ski in the Midwest snow and better than any skis I demoed in years past . I will be trying it out west shortly and will see how it performs in deeper snow. I’ve been told the AC 30 would be a little better out west but I can’t imagine it being any better on groomers. I’m 180 pounds and skiing 177cm length.

I’m a II+ skier at 168 lbs.  I had tried four other demo skies on the same day and set of runs.  Once I put the AC20/163’s on, I didn’t want to take them off.  All I had to do was think about turning and these skies were up on edge.  I was skiing well on steeper slopes that had intimidated me before.  I vowed to buy a pair if I could find them on sale near the end of the season, and eventually did.

I bought the Unlimited AC20’s in the spring sale locally. Prior to that I was skiing mostly blue runs in my comfort zone. After four outings with the Volkls, I was skiing blacks comfortably and even enjoyed a very icy double black. I can honestly say that they are worth every penny for the fun they give back to you. I am 5’-10” and 165lbs and this ismy first season skiing.
