Ski Review Brands

Salomon 2012 Preview

Written by Dan Morgan, Tuesday, 15 February 2011

We’ve already touched on Salomon’s new BBR and the changes to the Quest AT boot range in separate dedicated articles, so here is the rest.

Salomon Freeride & Freestyle 2012

Salomon Rocker 2

In big mountain/powder camp, the new Rocker 2 which we reported on briefly back in December last year is the sequel to the popular original Rocker. The Rocker 2 has a full rocker shape, rather than the tip rocker and flat tails of it’s predecessor making those switch landings in deep snow effortless. Weight is kept to a minimum with honeycomb inserts at the extremities of the ski and the steel edges stop short of the tips. In a ski this burly, any weight saving is a good thing. A full wood core and all the refinements you’d expect such as edge reinforcement complete the package. Visually subtle, the Rocker 2 doesn’t scream at you from the lift queue.

Available in 4 lengths from 170 up through 192 and with 115 or 122mm underfoot. Even the longer models “only” have a 26 meter raduis, so with a smidge of regular camber underfoot, the Rocker 2’s should be perfectly capable of getting you back to the lifts.

Length (cm) / Sidecut (mm) / Radius (m)

170 / 137-115/127 / 20.3
180 / 139-115/129 / 20.3
184 / 142-115/132 / 26
192 / 144-115/134 / 26

Salomon Dictator, Salomon Rocker & Salomon Rocker 2 2012

As for the rest, the popular Salomon Sentinel returns with a new paint job but remains the orthodox versatile big mountain tool for the strong skier with 290mm of rocker in the 184. Similar story with the powder friendly Czar in the 100mm + underfoot category with a whopping 670mm of rocker in the 184, moving up to the Dictator, fatter still at 114 underfoot with a flat tail, 300mm of rocker and available in 194 only.

Salomon Shogun, Salomon Czar & Salomon Sentinel 2012

After two seasons with the same graphics the Shogun and women’s specific Geisha return from the same moulds but with different, but still very Japan inspired, looks.

thank you salomon! this years enduro is a fantastic ski shape wise, and seem more rugged than the rossignol equivalent, but too rich for my pocket. i will stay on the crossmax 10s for another couple of months and go for something mid range here unless the rossignol experience floats my boat.

Owen - the 2012 Shogun has the same sizes and dimensions as last year.

Length (cm) / Dimension (tip-waist-tail - mm) / Radius (m):

164 / 126-97-116 / 20.6 173 / 128-99-118 / 23.1 182 / 130-101-120 / 25.9 191 / 132-103-122 / 28.7

Dan - In the northern hemipshere, some Salomon models are already in the shops (e.g. the BBR) but won’t be released en masse until around October this year ahead of winter 2012. However I have no idea if you guys down under get stuff early given the timing of your winter.

I demoed many pairs of skis last winter. I loved the Salomon Shoguns the best. I’ve never got a chance to try the Salomon Sentinels.

What ski is better? Im an all mountain skiier who usually spends more time in powder, trees and bowls but craves the occasional high speed carving. Loved the shoguns for its stability in high speeds.

Whats your take on Shoguns vs. Sentinel? what performs better in powder and whats better in high speeds (more stable in high speeds)?

thanks

jake

@ Colin.

No direct replacement. The XWing line has been replaced by the Enduro, so you should look look at the 800 XT depending on your needs. The 24 Hours in a 178 has similar dimensions (though narrower in the waist - you can also look at Daytona or Mustang or even the X-Cart), but stiffness is a personal preference.

If I were you, I’d go for the Enduro and embrace the early rise for a lot of fun (no real downsides), or if you ski quick and mainly on the piste, go for the 24 Hour cruisers or something form their piste line. Next seasons website is up now.

@Jacob.

They are very different skis. The Shogun is more playful, “fun” whereas the Sentinel is for charging steep and difficult lines all over the mountain, but holding it’s own elsewhere. If you are a strong guy, go for the Sentinels, but you won’t go wrong with the Shogun. More stable at high speeds? - I’d say the Sentinel for sure.

@Dan

Thanks for the help. I ski 70% piste, but love off piste and getting better each year. The Enduro XT 850 sounds like it may be most suitable for what I need. I’ve heard it’s better for the slightly heavier guy !!!
