Atomic Crimson Ti 2010 Ski Review

We liked the original Atomic Crimson, but found it a little soft for high speed cruising. The new Crimson Ti has been tweaked to satisfy the “Mach Schnell” crowd. Yes, they look really fat so no one expected the agility that the Crimson Ti serves up with very little effort.

Manufacturer’s Description of the Atomic Crimson TI:

"The Crimson TI, which is reinforced with Titanium inserts, combines lift in powder snow with optimum edge and stability on prepared pistes. The torsion flex control sectors on the 86 mm-wide all mountain ski provide stability and flexibilty exactly where needed."

The new Ti skis with a light agile feel and go anywhere with authority while being forgiving of balance errors. They initiate easily and maintain any arc the skier chooses. This is the original Crimson with more “guts” - an excellent choice for experts who ski everywhere.

Our testers loved the Crimson at the home of the newest location of Skiis & Biikes - Whistler B.C:

"Edge control is incredible and the new Crimson delivers race ski feel while being very capable in deep snow including huge dumps of powder."

"Ya..they’re wide, so edge to edge is not an instant transfer, but they’re quicker than one would think, and very versatile for skiers looking for a single ski that will take them everywhere including high speed cruising. Add the NEW lighter XTO binding; a nice improvement."

Shredded my Volkles at Big Sky this year (no surpise), so I bought a pair of Crimson Ti’s - 169s.  Very impressed;  great on steeps, crud, powder…goes anywhere.  But be careful on high speed groomers…I got turned around the first day I used them…not expecting them to turn with so little effort.  Once I understood what they could do, they have been fantastic.  Great skis.

I picked up a pair of next years 2011 crimson (178cm) last week.  A couple changes for 2011, 1) 88cm under foot now vs 86 and 2) most importantly now a wood core.  I tried a 2010 demo pair last month and haven’t noticed a big difference between the 2010 and 2011, probably the wood core will last longer though.

But I gotta tell ya,  these skis are amazing.  They are like most of the atomic line, you get what you put into them, best for aggressive advanced/expert skiers. They like to go fast and you really need to stomp on them to make them shine and shoot you into the next turn.  They also hold an edge better than any of the other skis I tried.  Probably not the best ski if you prefer mellow casual cruising but you will have a blast trying to keep up with these slingshots if you like to attack the mountain.

Another ski possibly worth checking out that I demo’d and liked was the Blizzard 8.7. In the end I personally preferred the crimson, felt like it had just a touch more life in it compared to the Blizzard, but both were fantastic, at least for my style of skiing.  My last pair of skis were black diamond kilowatts which overall is a decent ski, but way too passive of a ride for my taste, wish I would have demo’d them before buying (or not buying).  Had to suffer through 3 yrs with them.  Much happier now with the Crimsons.

I compared the 2010 AC 50 with the Atomic ti Crimson.  I love both companies, but I felt the Atomic Crimson was superior for control, especially at high speed.  I tested at Squaw Valley and the conditions were such that biased toward Atomic.  On a more powdery day I may have liked the AC50 better, tho my right ski tended to “float” out a bit.  Not sure what that was about, maybe just an odd day for me.  You’re splitting hairs between these two fine skis.  Can’t go wrong, it just depends on the day and the mood you’re in.  As much as I like my Atomic, I sorta have buyers regret about the AC50.  There’s always next year.

Like many above, I demo’d the AC30’s and 50’s, Mantra’s, Blackeye’s and Head Super Shapes… to name a few. And I am not an Atomic fan…. but then, I tried the Crimson’s. Don’t let the wider under foot freak you out - these are as quick as you want them to be,or can edge to edge them. And just a small roll and forward pressure and your into the turn. Push them hard and they respond easily…. and roll off them and they let you cruise out of the turn for nice true all mountain go where I want to skiing. In the soft and deeper they are near bullet proof. So sure under foot that they glide from turn to turn. Open them up and into big GS turns and they are very fast, very sure. The nice big shovel pushes everything away and no brick knocks or crud mishaps. And in the steeps you can throw them around from jump turn to turn in tights or chutes, cos they are a little lighter than others. Much more fun than K2’s and I think better tech than the AC’S. I use them all over the mountain with confidence and ease. I love them. You will too. Nice graphics also. If you want corduroy groomers, go buy Tigersharks… Beware: On the first hour of hard pack groomers, they are twitchy and you need to push yourself hard… but after the crowd has cut the corduroy, you rock! :) I’m a 51yr old Expert, 87 kg, 1.75m and bought the 177’s.

PS I also tried the Salomon Lords - a very close second! Nice too.

I love to ski everywhere but still like to lay it down on the piste.  I bought these skis this season in New Zealand and loved their versatility.  Crud, corn, groomed and spring handled really well.  Do you think that I could find any powder this season in NZ to try them out in…. not.  A personal friend of mine who is the president of the NZ Snowsports Instructors Alliance was totally converted to these skis when we swapped skis for a run.  It would have been longer but I didn’t care much for his Volkl’s.
