Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous 2008 Ski Review

While the Hot Rod Nitrous shares its footprint (shape) with the Nordica Hot Rod Top Fuel, it has a more reasonable flex pattern, allowing the skier to choose the turn shape rather than fight with the stiffness of the Top Fuel (which was fine at Top Fuel velocity in big arcs). The Hot Rod Nitrous is much more versatile without sacrificing high speed capability.

Model: Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous (2008)
Size(cm) / Radius(m): 170/15.8
Sidecut: 123-78-108

Manufacturer’s Description of the Nordica Hot Rod Nitrous:

"The Hot Rod series is engineered with four different waist constructions including wider waists, for powder and soft snow flotation, combined with with aggressive sidecuts, for ripping turns on hard packed and groomed snow. A little narrower than the hellcat the Hot Rod Nitrous is the ultimate versatile all-mountain ski if you spend time in a wide variety of snow conditions."

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

It’s a lot like the Top Fuel but there is no metal in the Nitrous, which should be great news for Mogul lovers that need one ski for everywhere and everything. That is not say that the Nitrous is the definitive “bump ski” but they are very accommodating while the absence of metal will help the skis retain their original camber without the hindrance of “metal memory.”

Much more “user friendly” and versatile than its big brother the Top Fuel (which was not a favorite) The Nitrous is characteristic of the newer ski designs that used to be “mid-fats” but as waists got wider and skis got shorter these are now almost the “norm.”

A nice blend of “beefy” and agile, for better skiers looking to go a little wider without sacrificing the benefits of a true “All Mountain” ski. Wasn’t this formerly known as a “Combi” ski?

I bought a pair of the nitrous skiis on a whim as they were a screaming deal.  I just tried them out on the steeps at Mammoth.  They held an edge without fail.  They seem to turn by thought alone.  They are as quick as you want them to be.

Bottom Line:  Turns out my whim is exactly the ski I would have bought had I done the research.  If they dissappeared I would buy another pair at full price if necessary.  ‘nough said.

Demo’d these skiis in Vail last weekend.  They came as the recomendation for combo terain skiing by the outfitter.  I was BLOWN away by these skiis!  Friggin rediculous control and edge no matter the snow.  I am purchasing the Green 08’s 162cm.  Try them, you will like!  Very light, stiff for control and fun as hell…  Can’t express how impressed I was!!!

Bought these around $400 online, to get to the next level. I’m 6’3 200lb and starting to feel comfortable on blacks, especially so now. Got the 178’s because I like to cruise at a pretty good clip. Thought I might be biting off more than I could chew. By the end of the first day I was carving ice and breaking eastern crud too. Rock solid and forgiving. These run circles around my old 165 cm Scramblers. Impressive!

Was offered these second hand by someone for $200 with bindings.  Took them for a spin on some fressh snow in the east.  Went in some modest fresh powder, some smooth hard pack cruisers, bumps in trees, untouched powder in trees, wide open bump fields, and ultimately quite a bit of crud.

I have never skied on anything like these skis.  All they want to do is turn and quick.  For what I do, mostly in the east, spending quite a bit of time in the bumps when available, and the occasion trip out west - these are the perfect skis.  I had so much fun.

Bought a pair of these after demo of Vokl AC30, K2 Apache Recons and the Hot Rods.  Vokl was nice on the ice and very hard packed, while they were a bit less forgiving on my stance and tail skiing.  K2’s didn’t seem to grip the hard pack as well as the Vokls and they weren’t as quick.  The K2s felt heavy.  I’ve been looking at the K2 recon for the past 2 years and was ready to buy a pair at the end of this season.  But….. The Hot Rods were sweeeeet.  I found they were very predictable in early morning ice and they ripped through afternoon crud like no tomorrow!  They feel like I’m skiing on nothing and they do everything I want them to do when I want them to do it! I used this site to help me make my decision, so I thought I’d put some back in for others!

demo at keystone and these skis are great. bumps hard pack, cruisers, great response. one problem was a vibration/shake when holding a hard edge at the end of a turn. may try a different length

I just bought a pair of these skis after demos of comparable skis over a three day period (in VT) by Dynastar, Volkl, Rossi and Head.  They were the first ski I tried, and the last (although in a longer length).  By far the best ski on hard packed (day 1) and fresh powder (day 3), fast on the trials, flexible as needed on the bumps and in the trees.
