Nordica SpeedMachine 12 2005 Ski Review

This is a serious carving ski and one of the little brothers of the SpeedMachine 14.  Well in actual fact not so little really.

Manufacturer’s Description:

“Carvers who want a stable and powerful ski with performance and maximum character”

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

The SpeedMachine 12 has all the aspects of the 14 but whilst behaving slightly better at slower speeds which is much friendlier for those pushing the intermediate plateau.

Wood core construction enhances its performance at high speeds – it is still fascinating to me that wood core still produces some of the best skis on the market despite the space age materials available.

These are ideal for aggressive carvers and people who like to throw their skis around the reds and blacks with lots of energy and movement.  Just like the 14, the 12 has got loads of edge grip when you make it work, has easy turn initiation and although they did not seem lightening quick from edge to edge on the hardpack, the SpeedMachine 12 were fast enough.

Lay them on an edge on hardpack and they respond aptly, leaving deep groves in the snow.  Again disappointingly no powder to report on but I imagine they would perform like most others with a waist in the mid-60’s.

Conclusion?

As it should be – the SpeedMachine 12 is like the 14 just not so stiff or as much as a handful. Not bad - not bad at all.

I was out in Wyoming this month and rode a demo for a day. This was one of the skis that was reccomended to me. The other was the Salomon SR10.

I am not overly aggressive in my style, however and the Speedmachine was a little too much. I eventually chose the Salomon but for subtle reasons - it had more quickness from edge to edge than the Nordica and was a bit more manegable. Thats not to say there isnt a lot to like about this Ski. For those into speed and the ability to turn on a dime the SM12 is an excellant choice. I really loved the ride but it offers a little too much power on Piste for me. I am getting too old I guess. 10 years ago I would have had a blast. I would, however reccomend the SM12 to aggressive skiers looking for fun on the slopes.
