Salomon 1080 / TenEighty / Ten Eighty 2004 Ski Review

Ten Eighty?  Arguably the coolest looking park ski around?  Founded among the young new skoolers as the definitive park ski, as it is light and highly movable in the air to help assist with modern complex tricks.

“For talented riders doing tricks in snowparks.”

Ski-Review’s Verdict:

The 1080 was really the first time many saw a twin tipped ski, and there was no better manufacturer to launch it with Salomon’s presence in the market.  Indeed the immediate popularity of the 1080 helped the Salomon cause no end.

They have enough flex to allow an “off axis landing” (a snowboarder term for messing it up!).  Surprisingly stiff in the waist and bendy either end.  It’s a rather hit and miss experience however as landing slightly forward or backward means the ski will bend and you have to be expecting it in order to use it to your advantage and stay vertical.

These skis are good for carving as they appeared to be very like the Rossignol Scratch FS we tested a while ago.  So long as you do not expect to get slalom type turns then you will not be disappointed.

There is no doubt the 1080 is designed for the park but it still offers the rider a useful toy to enjoy the mountain what ever the condition.  It has a wide body it is very good at ploughing through powder.

But above all you look cool in the lift queue!  Just make sure you have baggy trousers, helmet and not to forget the over priced goggles to match!

Conclusion?

A twin tipped ski with all the characteristics of a twin tipped ski.  Light, flexible, workable sidecut and a decent choice of lengths.  These skis will continue to be popular as they can be considered the definitive and original, but I urge you not to overlook offerings from other brands.

These things can really do it all. If you can carve, they will carve, suprisingly well. Of course they ride fakie like mad and love to jump. I used to ride Volk 5 stars but now rarely take them out. Fun Fun Fun!

For a mad 47-year-old with dodgy knees and hips, I can still mogul-bash and off-piste with the best of ‘em using these!

Except they have a foam core and stiffness deteriorates rather quickly.

The 1080 isn?t as bad as some of the other skis that salomon makes, but don?t expect any stability in long turns.  Decent for short quick turns that stay on edge or for people who are light.  The first series of 1080?s was much better however.  My advice is stay open to other brands like K2, Head, Movements, or Volkl, espcially if you want something that is more versitale.

1080’s are a good ski.  It will ski the entire mtn and park, but your lucky if you get more than a season out of ‘em. (60 days) Weak edges and base.  If you ski them out of the park in sketchy conditions it is only a matter of time before you blow and edge.  Salomon will replace but it takes 3-4 weeks.  Great ski if you get ‘em free.

I love this ski but for ice or crud they are a bit too light and soft.  I would suggest a stiffer ski in the east where its icy

I’m from the east…Attitash and Sunday River are my main two mountains.  1080s are dope guys.  I have gotten surprisingly 2 seasons of out them..and thats with beating the bag out of them on rails.  True I have no edges left in the middle but still ski-able.  Over two seasons of rails..I have a tiny little crack in one of my edges now..thats it…definately will give you the bang youve always dreamed about for your buck! Aha…peace.
